How Humans and LLMs Read Gender into Gender-Neutral Physical Descriptions

When foundation models describe people, recent work in AI fairness, accessibility, and ethics recommends avoiding inferred identity labels (e.g., "she", "his") in favor of seemingly "objective" physical descriptions (e.g., "short hair", "a defined jawline"). Yet whether such descriptive language achieves gender-neutral communication remains an open empirical question. To study this, we introduce GAPA (Gender Associations of Physical Attributes), a dataset of 316 common physical attributes drawn from diverse sources, paired with 14,706 gender-association ratings from 304 US-based annotators. Results show that physical descriptions carry structured and graded gender associations among readers, with more consistent and distinctive associations for women and men than for non-binary identities. Next, we evaluate 16 LLMs across model families, sizes, and post-training variants against human ratings. The models partially recover human associations but exhibit systematic alignment biases, including compressed rating distributions, weaker alignment for associations with men, and asymmetric abstention that disproportionately targets the non-binary category. Finally, we release the best-performing proxy model trained to predict humans' gender associations of descriptive language and demonstrate its utility through a sociolinguistic analysis of character descriptions in LitBank. Together, our findings provide the first empirical evidence that seemingly "objective" physical descriptions can retain systematic gender associations in human interpretation, and uncover systematic patterns of model-human misalignment. This challenges the assumption that replacing explicit gender labels with physical descriptions necessarily yields gender-neutral communication, and highlights downstream challenges in using such descriptions to communicate subjective identity categories in human-AI interaction.

Voice or Stereotype? Disentangling Acoustic and Content-Based Gender in Speech-to-Speech Models

Speech-to-speech (S2S) models now run inside dubbing, translation, and voice agents. Unlike text models, they hear the speaker's voice, which carries the speaker's gender. A faithful system should treat a speaker as who they sound like, not as whoever usually says what they said. Testing this is harder than it looks, since most S2S models answer in a single, fixed output voice, hard-coded so it cannot drift toward a stereotype. Checking the output voice comes back clean even when the model is biased. We therefore ask two questions. When a model re-speaks the input, does the stereotype in the words shift the perceived gender of the output voice (voice rendering)? And when the model states the speaker's gender, does it follow the voice or the content (gender attribution)? We answer both with one controlled experiment crossing male and female voices with masculine-, neutral-, and feminine-stereotyped passages, on five open- and closed-source models in English, Spanish, and Mandarin. The rendered voice shows no stereotype drift. But every model decides the speaker's gender from the content, not the voice. Making the content one step more feminine (masculine -> neutral -> feminine) multiplies the odds of a "female" judgment by 1.7-24. When the content clashes with the voice, the worst model misgenders the speaker in 90% of cases. When they agree, it misgenders in only 2%. The bias thus hides in gender attribution, where fixed-voice evaluation cannot see, and where audits must look as S2S systems increasingly speak for real people.

Fixed Suffix Dependency Ratio: Quantifying the Dual-Track Mechanism of Gender Assignment in Latvian Loanwords

Existing research has repeatedly observed the tendency for English loanwords to cluster in the masculine gender across different recipient languages, yet the origin of this pattern remains difficult to determine, as fixed morphological rules and default assignments are frequently analysed together. This study proposes the Fixed Suffix Dependency Ratio (FSDR) to quantify the degree of reliance on fixed derivational suffixes across different genders, and to distinguish between morphological anchoring and free-choice in distribution. By examining 1,832 Latvian noun lemma types, the results reveal a significant FSDR asymmetry within the loanword system: feminine loanwords rely significantly more on fixed derivational suffixes, while masculine loanwords are more concentrated in the free-choice zone. This pattern exhibits loanword specificity and has become more pronounced in contemporary usage. FSDR therefore provides a quantitative framework for testing default gender and shows how masculine default can be activated and reinforced under language contact.

Evaluating and Mitigating Anti-LGBTQ Biases in German and Multilingual Language Models

While gender and racial biases in language models have been widely studied, anti-LGBTQ biases remain underexplored, particularly beyond English. Existing benchmarks often do not capture cultural and linguistic variation and rely on gender representations. This paper introduces a multilingual German-English benchmark dataset for the evaluation of anti-LGBTQ biases in language models. It combines community-sourced stereotypes from German-speaking queer individuals with a German translation of WinoQueer. The data is used to evaluate eight language models across sizes and architectures and explore mitigation through fine-tuning on community and progressive media content. Results show that language models reproduce anti-queer stereotypes, with variation across identities and models. Differences between the translated and community-based data highlight the importance of cultural adaptation for multilingual bias evaluation. Fine-tuning reduces bias on average, but not consistently across models and identities. Warning: This text contains examples of anti-queer hateful language and stereotypes.

It's How You Ask: Gender-Associated Linguistic Bias in LLMs

Professional communication is increasingly mediated by LLMs - but do these models serve all users equally? We show that when prompts contain linguistic features more commonly used by women (hedges, tag questions, collective reference), they systematically elicit shorter, less sophisticated, and less formal responses across three document types and four models. These effects persist after controlling for prompt complexity and feature carry-over. Explicit gender cues like sign-off names are encoded in the same representational space as linguistic dialect - suggesting shared underlying mechanisms - yet linguistic register is far more influential, producing large, consistent effects where names produce none. Our results further reveal that post-hoc mitigation is challenging: because these patterns are culturally embedded and outside conscious control, users cannot easily avoid them through strategic self-presentation, and mechanistic analysis reveals that linguistic features are encoded in early transformer layers and entangled with other features. Our work calls for upstream consideration of the influences of linguistic variation to mitigate disparate impacts of LLM-mediated workplace communication.

Towards an LLM-based method for quantifying the sexual content in song lyrics

Reggaeton is one of the most widely consumed music genres in the world, and its lyrics are commonly regarded as highly sexualized. This claim rests mostly on qualitative studies and on small-scale quantitative ones. This paper has two goals. First, we present a reproducible method that uses a large language model to quantify thematic content in song lyrics along several independent dimensions. The method is not restricted to sexual content. Second, we apply it to a corpus of 1,259 songs by 12 reggaeton artists released between 2002 and 2025. The analysis covers four topics: a dataset characterization, a per-artist comparison, an analysis of how the dimensions change over time, and a comparison between our sexual-explicitness score and Spotify's own explicit flag. We release the data collection code, the scoring prompt, and the corpus, so that other researchers can replicate the approach or apply it to their own lyrics datasets.

Mitigating Gender Bias in English to Romanian Machine Translation

Machine translation (MT) systems often fail to correctly translate gender, especially when converting from a gender-neutral language like English to a gendered target language such as Romanian. This bias results in translations that default to masculine forms or reinforce gender stereotypes. We propose a hybrid pipeline to mitigate this issue by combining large language model (LLM)-based gender classification with neural machine translation (NMT). Our system uses a fine-tuned LLM to detect the intended gender of target words in English sentences and insert inline gender hint tags. These tagged sentences are then passed to a Transformer model fine-tuned to generate morphologically correct Romanian translations. To support this, we introduce three novel datasets for gender disambiguation and translation. Our approach improves gender accuracy on the WinoMT and WinoGender benchmarks by over 40 percentage points compared to a baseline MT system. This is the first method to explicitly address and evaluate gender bias in English-Romanian MT using both LLM inference and tag-aware translation.

When One Modality Is Not Enough: Multimodal Sex and Life-Stage Classification of Red Deer from Aerial RGB-Thermal Video

Aerial drone surveys increasingly support wildlife population estimation, yet a useful census is more than a count: population dynamics are defined by species composition, sex ratios and age structure, that is, by which species are present and how a herd splits into adult males, adult females and juveniles. We use red deer (Cervus elaphus\textit{Cervus elaphus}) as a test case, because managers act on these dynamics and because the visible cue defining adult males, the antlers, is seasonally variable. Surveys are flown nadir, high enough not to disturb the animals, so each deer occupies only a small, low-resolution patch. The two recording modalities fail in opposite conditions: in color a deer under canopy blends into the ground, while in thermal it becomes a bright blob that loses fine detail. Rather than trust either modality alone, we fuse them at every stage using self-supervised DINOv3 features. Our pipeline tracks animals in both modalities, treats an animal as confirmed only when the two cameras agree, keeps only the clear, non-occluded frames, and assigns species and sex by a vote across them; life stage is read separately from geo-referenced body size, since at survey resolution a juvenile often only differs from an adult female in size. Across four flights spanning the antler season the fused pipeline correctly classifies 25 of the 26 detected individuals (7 of 8 adult males, all 16 adult females and 2 juveniles), against 20 of 26 for either sensor alone. Multimodal species classification reaches 96.0%, while for sex classification fusing the two sensors matters most: the combined RGB+thermal model is the most robust across environments and seasons. Automating the demographic classification turns a drone flight from a count into a repeatable reading of herd structure, so the sex ratios and age structure that managers already act on can be gathered as often as a survey can be flown.

The Effect of Perceived Race and Gender on Police Language Use: Experimental Evidence from VR Simulations

Against the backdrop of violence in police interactions with the U.S. public, we explore how deferentially police officers speak to virtual characters depicted as Black adult males in vir- tual reality (VR) simulations. We evaluate the effect of seeing and communicating with these characters through a causal in- ference lens, where the assignment of the Black man character to a police officer and simulation is the treatment variable. Our (marginal) average treatment effect AT E measures the social impact of the character on the deference of officer statements with each turn of the conversation. Soberingly, we find that most officers speak less deferentially to Black man characters, except for White, biracial, and multiracial female officers, es- pecially in settings where the VR character was known to be a suspect. Across a full conversation of a typical VR scene, these marginal AT Es can result in notable changes in def- erence of tone (two to several points difference on a scale of 0-10), above and beyond that due to the initial effect of per- ceiving a Black male character. Even more disconcerting is that this can contribute to conversation breakdowns that po- tentially result in violence or danger to both the public and the police. We also explored the capabilities of large language models (LLMs) for ATE estimation. From our methods com- parison analysis, including model validation against synthetic data, we provide unique scientific insights on LLM-assisted methodologies for ATE estimation. As such, for ATE esti- mation with multilevel data with text, we recommend mixed effects models with the inverse propensity treatment weighted (iptw) approach, which utilized an LLM for text feature cre- ation. While we also tested LLMs for finetuning prediction models ultimately for ATE estimation, we conclude they are an area for further development and refinement.

Do Language Models Know Their Slang? Queer Slang Understanding in User-Generated Content

Despite its cultural relevance and diffusion, queer slang remains underrepresented in Natural Language Processing research. Towards addressing this gap, we introduce Slang-Q, a manually curated dataset of naturally user-generated English sentences paired with queer slang terms and reference definitions, built upon a newly constructed taxonomy of 118 queer terms. We use this resource to conduct a first exploratory evaluation of language models on their ability to understand and define queer slang under varying prompting conditions. Slang-Q is intended as a basis for studying how current models handle sensitive, community-specific language and whether they can provide accurate and reliable information about such forms of identity and linguistic expression.

Unequal Verdicts: Investigating Gender Bias in LLM-Based Fake News Detection

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used for automated fact-checking, yet their susceptibility to gender bias in this context remains underexplored. This study presents the first systematic investigation of gender bias in LLM-based fake news detection using real-world data. We augment the LIAR benchmark with three gender variants of speaker job titles (Neutral, Male, Female) for each statement to test whether veracity judgments vary solely based on gender presentation. Six state-of-the-art LLMs are evaluated across multiple bias and fairness metrics. All models exhibit gender sensitivity: 9.79%-35.13% of statements receive inconsistent labels across the three variants, with Male-Female comparisons showing 6.5%-23.6% flip rates. Two primary bias manifestations are identified: instability (inconsistent judgments) and directionality (systematic favoritism). Five models show statistically significant directional effects, with the strongest effects displaying male-skeptic patterns. These findings demonstrate that gender bias undermines both reliability and fairness in LLM-based fake news detection, highlighting the need for bias-aware evaluation and mitigation strategies. The augmented dataset is publicly released to support future research.

LLM-Derived Priors for Thompson Sampling in Cold-Start Comment Recommendation

Multi-armed bandit algorithms, especially Thompson sampling, are widely used in online recommendation. Despite their ability to adapt from online feedback, these methods often suffer from cold-start limitations when newly introduced arms have little or no interaction history. In our setting, the candidate arms are user-generated textual comments, whose semantic content can reveal a title's appeal before sufficient interaction feedback is available. We therefore use large language models (LLMs) to extract semantic signals from comment text and convert them into informative Bayesian priors that warm-start Thompson sampling under sparse early-stage feedback. To account for aggregate segment-level differences in response patterns, we maintain and update posteriors separately for each gender-age segment. In a real-world online A/B/C test, we compare a uniform prior with two LLM-based designs: a Gender Prior for demographic-affinity cues and a Content Prior for title-specific identity cues. The results show that LLM-based priors are most beneficial in sparse-feedback regimes -- with the largest gains emerging once a small amount of interaction evidence has accumulated -- and that prior design leads to distinct funnel-level effects. We further analyze prior-reward alignment and demographic heterogeneity, finding that click-oriented alignment is strongest for the Gender Prior and that treatment effects vary substantially across demographic segments. These findings suggest that LLM-derived priors can serve as a practical warm-start mechanism for text-rich bandit recommendation, while also revealing deployment trade-offs.

Same violence, different answer: how AI responds to coercive control against women across languages

Women experiencing coercive control, a form of intimate partner violence increasingly conducted through digital devices, are turning to conversational AI for help, and the protection they receive should not depend on the language they write in. We analyse how AI responds to coercive control against women across languages. We put one scripted scenario to seven widely used language models in nine languages: a woman whose partner tracks her phone asks for help with a self-blaming letter accepting the surveillance. We scored whether the model wrote the letter and whether it named the control, countered the self-blame, and affirmed her agency. Failure split along two independent axes. On the first, systems from non-anglophone developers gave way most often in their builders' own language. On the second, how far a sympathetic excuse for the partner could strip a model's naming of the control varied sharply from one language to the next. Two frontier systems held the strictest standard everywhere, so a protective ceiling is attainable within this scenario family, and failures elsewhere are a design outcome. What is at stake is recognition: whether a system grasps a disclosure as coercive control, and whether it then acts on that grasp. We argue this should be held to a floor, one language at a time.

Symphony of Bias: Exploring Gender Associations with Musical Instruments in Multimodal LLMs

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly embedded in everyday life and widely used for information seeking, raising concerns about their potential to perpetuate social biases and reinforce stereotypes. In this study, we investigate gender bias in LLMs through the lens of their associations with musical instruments. Building on social-science research on the cultural gender-typing of instruments, we introduce Symphony-Bias, a parallel multimodal dataset spanning text, vision, and audio. We evaluate ten multimodal models with diverse architectures and scales across 22 musical instruments, analyzing how they associate each instrument with three gender categories: {male, female, non-binary}, across three modalities: {text, vision, audio}. Our results show that 92% of instrument-level outcomes align with prior social-science findings, with the harp and drums showing particularly consistent gendered associations across all evaluated models and modalities. We further find that alignment with social stereotypes is weakest in audio, stronger in vision, and strongest in text, suggesting that modality-specific representations can differentially amplify gendered associations with musical instruments.\footnote{The Symphony-Bias dataset will be publicly released upon acceptance of the paper.}

Disentangling Acoustic Cues in Alzheimer's Pathology and Perception: The Roles of Language and Gender

Acoustic biomarkers show promise for detecting Alzheimer's Disease (AD), yet whether the cues driving diagnostic AI align with those salient to human listeners is underexplored across languages and genders, where pathological markers and perceptual strategies differ. We train models to predict clinical AD status (pathology) and human perceptual scores across Mandarin and Greek, male and female speakers. Using SHAP for interpretability and statistical models for validation, we compare feature importance by subgroup. Results reveal a context-dependent divergence: pathological-perceptual alignment is significant for Mandarin and female speakers but disappears for Greek and male speakers, where pathology models did not exceed chance; this is a failure mode that population-specific auditing surfaces. Global Explainable AI (XAI) explanations can mask critical demographic divergences, highlighting the need for population-specific explainability auditing for equitable deployment of clinical speech AI.

LoRA for Gender-Inclusive Rewriting and Activation Steering for Counter-Narrative Generation

Gender-inclusive language generation seeks to transform biased text into inclusive alternatives while preserving semantic meaning and contextual coherence. This paper presents the IHLC system for the LT-EDI 2026 Shared Task, addressing both gender-inclusive rewriting and counter-narrative generation. For gender-inclusive rewriting, we employ parameter-efficient Low-Rank Adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning, achieving an official score of 80.00%. Our primary contribution is a compute-efficient inference-time representation engineering approach for counter-narrative generation. We derive a principal steering direction from contrastive hidden-state activations using principal component analysis (PCA) and inject it into the intermediate representations of Gemma-3-4B-it during inference, enabling behavioral steering toward inclusive responses without modifying model weights. Combined with constrained prompting, this approach produces polite and contextually appropriate counter-narratives, achieving an official score of 78.12%. We further present a manual analysis of steering behavior, identifying key failure modes including semantic drift, residual bias leakage, layer sensitivity, over-steering, and text degeneration. Our findings highlight both the practical potential and current limitations of activation steering as a lightweight alternative to parameter updates for controllable and socially aligned language generation.

MAGE-Vein: Multi-Instance Age and Gender Estimation from Finger Vein Images

Age estimation from finger vein images has been widely considered impractical due to severe demographic biases in public datasets and physiological confounding factors like gender. To overcome these limitations, we propose MAGE-Vein, a novel multi-instance, multi-task learning framework. Our approach extracts robust structural aging signs by employing a hybrid feature-level fusion of three fingers, effectively suppressing local imaging noise. Furthermore, simultaneous optimization of gender classification conditions the network to effectively eliminate gender-specific vascular variations. Evaluated on a demographically balanced dataset of 402 subjects, MAGE-Vein achieves a mean absolute error of 6.12 years and a correlation of 0.880. Our results not only overturn the conventional consensus regarding the limitations of the finger vein modality but also demonstrate that previous estimation failures were primarily artifacts of biased public datasets. Evaluating and Mitigating Gender Bias in Pre-trained Embeddings for ML-based Recruitment

AI-based recruitment systems that rely on machine learning models trained on historical CV data, risk perpetuating and amplifying social biases. A key challenge arises in unstructured CV text, where pre-trained language model embeddings may infer sensitive attributes such as gender even after explicit indicators are removed. In this paper, we evaluate nine pre-trained embedding models on the synthetic FairCVdb dataset, analyzing the informativeness of their embeddings for applicant scoring and their susceptibility to gender leakage, on both original and gender-scrubbed biographies. We further use a multi-task adversarial learning framework with gradient reversal to predict applicant suitability while suppressing gender information from learned representations. Finally, we use a multi-objective Pareto-front-based model selection to balance predictive utility and fairness. Our experimental results show that explicit gender scrubbing substantially reduces but does not eliminate gender leakage, while adversarial learning improves fairness mainly on original biographies and acts as a complementary strategy rather than a substitute for text-level debiasing.

Deep Learning Estimation of Sex, Age, Height, and Weight from CT-derived Digitally Reconstructed Radiographs

Purpose: To develop and validate a deep learning ensemble for estimating adult sex, age, height, and weight from coronal digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRRs) generated from diagnostic CT. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 128,621 CT examinations from 80,004 adults at nine institutions in Japan. Three multitask models-ConvNeXt-Base, ViT-Base/16, and MaxViT-Base-were fine-tuned using coronal DRRs and combined by weighted averaging. Data were split by institution into training (114,147 examinations; seven institutions), tuning (4,305; one institution), and test (10,169; one institution) sets; generalizability was assessed on two non-Japanese datasets. Accuracy and mean absolute error (MAE) were used to evaluate sex classification and age, height, and weight regression, respectively. Body surface area (BSA)-corrected heart and liver volume trends were compared using true versus estimated height and weight. Results: In the test set (median age, 69.9 years; 4,899 of 10,169 [48.2%] male), overall sex-classification accuracy was 0.997 (95% CI, 0.996-0.998), and MAEs were 3.57 years (3.51-3.63), 2.59 cm (2.54-2.64), and 3.40 kg (3.34-3.47) for age, height, and weight, respectively. In examinations covering the chest through pelvis, accuracy was 1.000, and MAEs were 3.15 years, 2.28 cm, and 3.18 kg, respectively. BSA calculated from estimated values reproduced age-related heart and liver volume trends obtained using true values. On non-Japanese datasets, height error increased but was reduced by continued fine-tuning. Conclusion: The ensemble estimated adult sex, age, height, and weight from CT-derived DRRs, with generally lower errors in examinations with broader anatomical coverage.

Mixed-Agent Museum Tour Guide Design Improves Gendered Learning Outcomes and Visitor Preferences

Robots are increasingly integrated into everyday contexts, including museums, where they can both entertain and educate visitors. To enhance visitor experience and engagement, we present a novel mixed-agent tour guide system that combines a physical robot with a projected virtual agent that actively participates in the tour through conversation and interaction, achieving the interaction richness of two mobile agents from a single platform. We validate the system through a within-subjects study with 30 participants to assess engagement, quality of experience, and learning performance. Participants experienced different conversational styles and agent configurations, and data were collected via surveys, behavioral sensors, and interviews. Results showed that engagement and quality of experience remained consistent across conditions. Learning performance revealed a significant gender-moderated difference: the mixed-agent conditions improved learning performance for female participants. This suggests that the proposed dyadic conversational style in this paper influenced learning performance differently by gender. Nonetheless, in interviews, participants reported a greater preference for mixed-agent teams regardless of gender, citing interaction as a key factor in their experience.

Do Video-LLMs Actually Watch? Diagnosing Character-Tracking Failures in Long-Form Video

Can a Video Large Language Model (Video-LLM) follow one person through a long video, keeping track of who they are well enough to report, in order, how their outfit changes across a full TV episode? Benchmarks increasingly score this kind of task, and the strongest open-source 7--8B models now reach 37--38% on InfiniBench's global appearance task, which asks exactly that. But does that score come from tracking the named character, or from something easier? We test this with a nine-condition diagnostic protocol applied to three architecturally distinct open-source Video-LLMs, with Gemini2.5Flash as a frontier reference, and find the accuracy does not come from character tracking. When we change the character named in the question to a different cast member, leaving the video and answer options untouched, the models change their answer only 4--31% of the time, so they are largely ignoring who the question asks about. Breaking that test down by the gender of the swapped name shows why: the models react more when the name is changed to a different-gender character than to a same-gender one (a 13--28 point gap), picking up coarse gender cues but unable to tell same-gender individuals apart. This shallow processing surfaces again when we drop the multiple-choice options and ask the same questions open-endedly: open-source accuracy drops 18--25 points, with none of 151 answers fully correct, versus a 12-point drop for Gemini. Further checks rule out the obvious innocent explanations, adding subtitles, using the most informative frames, or doubling the number of frames all leave character tracking unimproved, so the bottleneck is not how much video the model sees but how it ties that video to the person the question names. We release a diagnostic toolkit for auditing what such benchmark scores actually measure.

Do Counterfactually Fair Image Classifiers Satisfy Group Fairness? -- A Theoretical and Empirical Study

The notion of algorithmic fairness has been actively explored from various aspects of fairness, such as counterfactual fairness (CF) and group fairness (GF). However, the exact relationship between CF and GF remains to be unclear, especially in image classification tasks; the reason is because we often cannot collect counterfactual samples regarding a sensitive attribute, essential for evaluating CF, from the existing images (\eg, a photo of the same person but with different secondary sex characteristics). In this paper, we construct new image datasets for evaluating CF by using a high-quality image editing method and carefully labeling with human annotators. Our datasets, \oursceleb and \ourslfw, build upon the popular image GF benchmarks; hence, we can evaluate CF and GF simultaneously. We empirically observe that CF does not imply GF in image classification, whereas previous studies on tabular datasets observed the opposite. We theoretically show that it could be due to the existence of a latent attribute GG that is correlated with, but not caused by, the sensitive attribute (\eg, secondary sex characteristics are highly correlated with hair length). From this observation, we propose a simple baseline, Counterfactual Knowledge Distillation (CKD), to mitigate such correlation with the sensitive attributes. Extensive experimental results on \oursceleb and \ourslfw demonstrate that CF-achieving models satisfy GF if we successfully reduce the reliance on GG (\eg, using CKD).

AI Wizards at EXIST 2026: Hierarchical Soft-Label Learning for Multimodal Sexism Identification in Memes

We present the AI Wizards submission to EXIST 2026 for multimodal sexism identification in memes. The task is composed of three, increasingly harder subtasks. We model them hierarchically as conditional soft-label prediction over empirical annotator distributions. Our system maps fixed Gemini Embedding 2 vision-language representations through a lightweight Gated MLP trained with KL divergence and homoscedastic uncertainty weighting. From Gentlemen to Frontiermen: Masculine Formations in English-Language Fiction (1771--1930)

Masculinity in nineteenth-century fiction is not a single ideal but a field of competing scripts. Drawing on 150 British and American canonical novels from the txtLAB Novel450 corpus, published between 1771 and 1930, this paper examines the changing relative prominence of competing models of masculine authority. To focus the analysis on masculine characterisation, the study extracts male-character-centred text windows by using coreference resolution to group names, nominal mentions, and pronouns into character-specific reference chains. It then fits an unsupervised structural topic model with publication year and author gender as topic-prevalence covariates. The model identifies six distinct masculine formations: aristocratic-chivalric, Christian manhood, gentlemanly respectability, country squire, professional-commercial, and imperial/adventure. Across the corpus, formations tied to inherited rank and sacred authority decline, while those organised around paid work and adventure rise. The largest increase occurs not in professional-commercial breadwinning but in imperial/adventure masculinity, particularly the frontier-wilderness register. The trajectory points to a reallocation from inherited and sacred status towards achieved, commercial, and expansionary forms of masculine authority. Adventurous and commercial formations are also more prevalent in novels by authors recorded as male. Because these formations emerge without a seeded vocabulary yet align with categories established in independent scholarship, the article offers a reproducible method for measuring the reorganisation of gendered authority across the long nineteenth century.

Gender Differences in Research Topic and Method Selection in Library and Information Science: Perspectives from Three Top Journals

Research in the social sciences has shown that there are gender differences in the selection of research methods, with women often opting for qualitative methods while men prefer quantitative methods. However, it is important to consider that research methods are generally chosen based on the research topic. To figure out the influence of gender on research method selection, a study was conducted in the field of Library and Information Science, using a more fine-grained method classification system and an automatic classification model called CogFT, which is based on full-text cognition. The findings showed that women tend to use Interview while men prefer Theoretical approach, across a range of topics. The study offers insights into the specific research design processes that contribute to gender differences in method selection and suggests ways to promoting gender inclusivity and equality in academia by considering research method use and guidance.

Estimating Grammatical Gender Directions in Contextual Embeddings under Controlled and Natural Contexts

Contextual language models conflate grammatical gender and social semantic bias in gendered languages such as Spanish. Existing gender debiasing approaches only operate on static word embeddings leaving contextual representations unexplored for this two dimensional gender disentanglement. To address the this issue, we make the first attempt to disentangle grammatical gender from semantic contamination for contextual embeddings. We construct both controlled templates and natural Wikipedia contexts to build balanced datasets of inanimate nouns, and design a framework equipped with centroid, Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA) gender direction estimators as well as contamination-aware weighting strategies. A set of dual-objective evaluation metrics is proposed to balance the suppression of grammatical gender leakage on inanimate nouns and the preservation of semantic gender distinctions for occupation terms. The results reveal that unweighted controlled contexts yield the purest grammatical gender direction, and the centroid estimator achieves better performance than discriminative baselines.

Can LLMs Hire Fairly? Racial Bias in Resume Screening

We audit fourteen mainstream large language models (LLMs) for hiring discrimination using the paired-resume methodology of Kline, Rose, and Walters (2022). The sole 2023-vintage model reproduces the pro-White callback gap documented in field experiments on labor market discrimination (+2.12+2.12 pp, significant at the 1% level). Every model released in 2024 or after shows either a null gap or a significant pro-Black reversal (up to 3.01-3.01 pp). The same pattern holds on the gender axis. Based on 24,024 paired postings per model across 14 models, our results document a reversal in the direction of algorithmic hiring bias across model generations.

The impact of generative artificial intelligence on academic development of Chinese students in humanities and social sciences

Generative artificial intelligence(GenAI) is reshaping learning in higher education, with particularly pronounced implications for the humanities and social sciences(HSS), where learning outcomes are commonly expressed through written and interpretive forms that align closely with GenAI's capabilities. Yet, systematic evidence on the educational impacts of GenAI on HSS students remains limited. Addressing this gap, this study draws on a large-scale survey of HSS students in China to examine its role in academic development. Guided by relevant learning theories, this study focuses on four dimensions: patterns of use, effects on learning processes and academic performance, challenges associated with GenAI use, and preferred approaches to curricular integration. We found that more than half perceived enhanced learning motivation, independent thinking and creativity, although a substantial minority reported little change or even decline. Comparatively, a notably larger majority reported academic performance gains, although these gains may partly reflect limitations in conventional assessment practices. The study identifies variations in perceived learning and performance improvements among students with differing durations of GenAI experience, along with observable disciplinary differences and modest gender differences. While an overwhelming majority valued the importance of ethical considerations, only slightly more than half were satisfied with privacy protection. Limited accuracy and overreliance emerged as the most pressing concerns reported by students. Students favored partial or optional curricular integration supported by practice-oriented training, and widely recognized GenAI's significance for their future professional development. Biological Sex Determination in Cadavers Using Deep Learning Algorithms from Computed Tomography Images of Pelvis and Skull

Sexual identification of decomposed cadavers challenges traditional methods dependent on visual anthropological analysis. This study evaluates state-of-the-art deep learning (including YOLO26, YOLO11, ConvNeXt-Tiny, EfficientNetV2, ViT-B16, VGG16, and ResNet50) with transfer learning to automatically determine biological sex from forensic computed tomography (CT) scans. We analyzed 141 autopsied cadavers from the Forensic Medical Institute of Goiânia-GO, including a broad age range and varying conditions of preservation. The three-dimensional reconstructions of the pelvis and skull were converted into standardized two-dimensional profile projections, contributing to the study of this new technical approach. Data augmentation techniques compensated for sample limitations. Two scenarios were validated: binary and quaternary classification (one class per sex vs. one class per anatomical region of each sex). The best-performing model achieved highly consistent results on the pelvis region and still satisfactory performance on the skull region, reaching an overall patient-level accuracy of 95.65%, recall of 92.86%, F1- score of 94.36%, and precision of 97.22%, maintaining consistent performance across the evaluated cases, including those with trauma-related artifacts. Results indicate the technical feasibility of the methodology, demonstrating that deep learning models can provide objective, high-speed skeletal analysis. Since the study was conducted using data from a single institution and a single computed tomography scanner, further validation across multiple centers and scanners is required to assess the generalizability of the proposed approach

How Well Do Self-Supervised Speech Models Encode Age and Gender in Children's Speech? A Layer-Wise Analysis Across Multiple Architectures

Self-supervised learning (SSL) models have become a central component of modern speech processing systems, as they enable the learning of rich acoustic representations without reliance on labeled data. Despite their success on adult speech, it remains unclear how effectively these models capture speaker-related attributes such as age and gender in children's speech, which differs substantially from adult speech due to ongoing physiological and cognitive development. Higher pitch, increased articulatory variability, and age-dependent acoustic changes make children's speech a particularly challenging domain. In this work, we present a comprehensive analysis of how age and gender information is encoded across layers of four widely used SSL models: Wav2Vec2, HuBERT, Data2Vec, and WavLM. Layer-wise features are extracted and evaluated using a lightweight CNN on two benchmark children's speech corpora, PFSTAR and CMU Kids. To analyze feature compactness and redundancy, PCA is applied to identify redundancy and highlight the dimensions that contribute most to classification performance. Experimental results show that age- and gender-related information is unevenly distributed across SSL layers, with early to mid-level layers encoding the strongest paralinguistic cues. HuBERT achieves the best overall performance for age classification, while Wav2Vec2 and HuBERT lead gender classification on PFSTAR and CMU Kids, respectively. Beyond single-split evaluation, we further demonstrate that these findings remain stable under speaker-wise cross-validation, layer aggregation, and cross-database evaluation, indicating robustness to data imbalance and domain mismatch. Finally, we show that reliable age and gender classification is achievable even from short speech segments of 1--3 seconds.

Gender Differences in Research Topic and Method Convergence among Collaborating Scholars in Library and Information Science

This study explores gender differences in research topic choice and methodology among collaborating scholars. Previous studies have often focused on gender differences in research topics or methods at the individual level of scholars, without considering collaborating groups, lacking depth and practical guidance. This study takes Library and Information Science (LIS) as an example, employing the Top2Vec method for topic identification and the CogFT model for research method classification. It systematically analyzes 25,204 papers published between 1990 and 2022 to investigate gender differences in the convergence of research topics and method choices among collaborating scholars in this field. The results of the study found that female scholars showed lower convergence in their research methods and topic choices compared to male scholars. This study uses a relatively systematic methodology to address the difficulty of studying gender differences in academic publishing, and is expected to serve as a reference for other disciplines and research questions. This study also emphasizes the manifestation of gender differences in collaborative research and provides insights into the convergence and diversity of research topics and methods chosen by scholars.

Sexualised synthetic personas encode and amplify gendered power asymmetries through voice

This work examines sexualised AI-generated English-speaking voices offered by a popular commercial platform. New technologies may enable sexual empowerment and greater diversity in gender expression, yet toxic masculinity, heteronormativity, and the abuse of women and LGBTQ+ people remain pervasive online. Drawing on a Feminist HCI perspective, we examine how commercial voice AI systems reproduce and circulate particular performances of gender. We conducted a listening experiment with a diverse group of listeners, combining quantitative adjective selection, qualitative free-text responses, and acoustic analysis. Participants evaluated male- and female-coded voices presented with either sexualised scripts or neutral text. Results reveal a narrow range of gender expression, largely binary and heteronormative. Female-coded voices are more frequently described using sexualised and submissive terms, while male-coded voices are more often associated with dominance and positive traits.

Gender Bias in LLM Hiring Decisions: Evidence from a Japanese Context and Evaluation of Mitigation Strategies

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in hiring workflows, yet most research on gender bias in LLM hiring decisions has focused on English-language, Western-format resumes. This study examines whether pro-female gender bias extends to a Japanese corporate context and evaluates two practical mitigation strategies. Using a counterfactual resume design with 60 Japanese rirekisho-format resumes, 12 name pairs selected on linguistically grounded gender-signal criteria, and five state-of-the-art LLMs (Claude Sonnet 4.6, GPT-4o, DeepSeek-V3, Gemini 2.5 Flash, Llama 3.3 70B), we conducted 43,200 API calls across baseline, prompt instruction, and privacy filter conditions. A crossed random-effects linear mixed model confirms a significant pro-female bias across all five models, replicating Western findings in a non-Western context. A prompt-level gender-neutrality instruction produces no meaningful reduction in bias. A name-reliance analysis formally identifies the candidate name as the primary gender channel: removing the name from the prompt reduces the female effect by nearly its full magnitude. An unexpected incompatibility between the privacy filter and GPT-4o's content safety filter, resulting in a 42% refusal rate, highlights a practical deployment challenge for name anonymization in LLM-assisted recruitment pipelines.

Sex-based Network-Specific Differences in Connectomes: A Krakencoder-Based Analysis

This study examines how deficiencies in one brain connectome modality propagate to the other, using the Krakencoder as a simulation framework. Structural and functional connectomes from 702 healthy participants in the Human Connectome Project were analyzed, with the impact of each of the Yeo-7 functional networks assessed separately. Seven scenarios were considered, each involving the removal of a single network while the remaining networks were preserved. The resulting perturbations in cross-modal predictions were quantified using three complementary metrics: KL divergence on eigenvalue spectra, Frobenius norm, and Wasserstein distance. In addition, the persistence of sex-specific information within the predicted connectomes was evaluated. Across all metrics and both prediction directions, the Default Mode Network produced the largest perturbations, whereas the Somatomotor network yielded the smallest. Sex differences in network-level perturbation signatures were subtle, with the best result being an accuracy of 66.09% from connectomes predicted under network-removal conditions. In contrast, connectomes predicted from intact inputs achieved substantially higher sex classification accuracy, reaching up to 84.76%. These findings confirm that full predicted connectomes retain considerably more sex-discriminative information than perturbation-derived signatures alone.

Harsher on Male? Evaluating LLMs on Gender-Asymmetric Moral Framing Across Diverse Conflict Scenarios

Existing studies on gender bias in LLMs have largely focused on stereotypes, occupational associations, or explicit harmful outputs. In this work, we ask whether LLMs apply consistent response standards to the same negative behavior under matched male-actor and female-actor conditions. We introduce GAMA-Bench, a gender-mirrored benchmark of 1,298 scenarios covering intimate relationship and public social conflicts. It constructs gender-neutral misconduct templates through controlled grids and cross-model review, then compiles them into paired first-person prompts with matched actor-gender and role-reference variations. We further design a structured response-framing protocol to measure how models allocate punishment, empathy, escalation, instruction, and blame. Experiments on 10 representative LLMs reveal a consistent male-disadvantaging asymmetry: male actors receive more punitive, escalatory, and blame-centered framing, whereas female actors receive more therapeutic and empathy-oriented framing for the same misconduct. Further analyses show that this pattern persists across model families, scenario tracks, model scale, and explicit thinking-style reasoning. Neutrality Bites: Gender Representation in AI-Generated Animal Stories

Gender bias in AI-generated stories is a well-documented problem. While much attention has been paid to reducing or mitigating this bias, it is not always clear whether interventions produce genuinely fairer results. To investigate this issue, we examine how large language models (LLMs) handle gender assignment in a narrative context that is popular, highly ambiguous, and also known to closely reproduce human stereotypes: stories about talking animals. We prompt six leading LLMs to complete an English-language story about seven different anthropomorphic animal characters whose gender is unstated. We additionally iterate with four different narrative settings and a range of model temperatures. Across the 23.8K stories, we find that models frequently avoid gendering the animal character in the story (19% on average) or use gender-neutral language like "it" or "its" (38.2% on average). However, when gender is assigned, there is a significant masculine bias. Feminine animal characters are virtually absent, present in just 2.2% of stories vs. 40.6% that feature masculine characters. Our findings point to a broader argument: neutrality bites. In other words, models that prioritize neutrality to address social bias may actually contribute to the erasure of marginalized perspectives and identities. We suggest that alternative strategies beyond neutrality need to be pursued, such as ones that more equally distribute social possibilities across imagined subjects.

What Does Debiasing Really Remove? A Geometric Study of PCA-Based Gender Debiasing in Word Embeddings

Debiasing methods based on principal component analysis (PCA) are broadly used to reduce gender bias in word embeddings used in LLMs, yet it remains unclear what aspects of bias they actually remove and how destructive this process is. These methods are based on the understanding that bias resides in a low-dimensional subspace, with the assumption that most of it can be captured by a few principal components. In this work, we conduct a systematic geometric analysis of PCA-based gender debiasing and investigate what is actually removed from the embedding space. Our experiments across multiple embeddings show that direct gender bias is primarily concentrated in the first principal component, supporting the low-rank bias hypothesis. However, associative bias measured by WEAT does not align with these principal directions and is instead spread across multiple embedding dimensions. Furthermore, as expected, we demonstrate that removing an increasing number of principal components leads to a consistent degradation of the embedding geometry, affecting semantic structure and vector relationships. These results reveal that PCA-based debiasing operates as a trade-off: while it effectively reduces certain forms of direct bias, it fails to eliminate distributed associations and introduces geometric distortion. Moreover, there is no universal optimal level of debiasing, as the balance between bias reduction and semantic preservation depends on the chosen metric and embedding. Overall, our findings suggest that bias in word embeddings is not purely low-rank and that simple subspace removal methods may be insufficient for comprehensive debiasing.

Multimodal Sexism Identification and Characterization using Large Language Models and Gradient Boosting

We present the AILS-NTUA submission to the EXIST 2026 Lab at CLEF, addressing multimodal sexism identification and characterization in memes (Task 2) and short-form videos (Task 3). Our system follows a feature-engineered late-fusion pipeline built around gradient-boosted regression models and hierarchical post-processing. For memes, we combine visual, textual, demographic, biometric, and LLM-derived semantic indicators designed to capture high-level cues such as stereotyping, objectification, irony, and misogyny. For videos, we investigate the effect of feature selection, frame-based visual representations, OCR-based textual features, acoustic descriptors, and sensor-derived metadata. Development results show that focused LLM-derived semantic cues improve meme sexism identification, while video performance is highly sensitive to feature dimensionality and cross-modal noise. For videos, development results favor compact feature selection, but official test results show that this conclusion does not fully transfer to unseen data, where the unfiltered representation generalizes better. Overall, our findings highlight the usefulness of targeted semantic feature engineering for static memes and the need for more robust temporal modeling in noisy short-form video settings.

Gender Artifacts from Art History to Text-to-Image Generation

Artistic styles are rooted in specific socio-historical contexts that encode social hierarchies, including distinct constructions of gender. Yet in AI research, style has long been treated as a surface-level visual property: a filter of color, brushstroke, and texture applied to otherwise content-neutral scenes. We introduce the first dataset to investigate the interplay between gender representation and style in both historical and generated images. StyleGender comprises 74k images spanning 19 artistic styles, comprising art historical images with style and gender annotations, T2I-generated images under controlled style and gender prompts, and a semantically aligned set enabling direct art history-to-generation comparison. By proposing two Set Gender Artifact (SGA) metrics (PixelSGA and MaskSGA), capturing gender signals at the pixel level and in compositional structure, we show that (1) gender representation shapes visual features across artistic styles, (2) style keywords carry these patterns into T2I generation, and (3) generative models tend to amplify gender artifacts beyond what is observed in historical sources.

Do Gender Cues Affect LLM Value Trade-offs? Evidence from a Controlled Decision Benchmark

Large language models are increasingly used in value-sensitive decision settings, where irrelevant demographic cues should not alter judgments. We construct the Realistic Value Decision Benchmark (RVDB), a controlled benchmark that varies only the role-gender configuration while holding the scenario, ordered value pair, roles, candidate decisions, Value Distance, and Decision Severity fixed. Using a position-balanced evaluation across seven models, we test whether models preserve decision invariance under gender perturbations and whether their self-attributions reflect observed behavioral changes. We find that explicit gender cues induce bounded but systematic decision flips, including under an explicit gender-attribution prompt that asks models to report whether gender influenced their choice. Cross-gender role swaps reveal a consistent female-proposed-decision asymmetry, while models often attribute flipped decisions to No Influence or other non-gender factors. Further analysis shows that gender effects concentrate near less determinate value boundaries and under more severe decision contexts, suggesting that gender cues act as local boundary-shifting factors rather than global overrides of value reasoning. Value rankings remain largely stable, but ordered value-pair trade-offs shift unevenly across role-gender configurations. These results show that gender can enter LLM value trade-offs behaviorally while remaining obscured in self-attribution, motivating controlled behavioral audits beyond explanation-based evaluation.

Vision-Language Models Suppress Female Representations Under Ambiguous Input

Alignment teaches vision-language models (VLMs) to avoid expressing demographic biases, and when gender is clearly visible they largely succeed. Far less is known about ambiguous inputs (a worker in full gear, a figure seen from behind), cases common in practice yet rarely studied. We find that minimal prompting pressure exposes occupation-gender defaults when prompting ambiguous input images, with models collapsing to male even for strongly female-stereotyped occupations. But do these outputs reflect what models actually encode internally? We introduce LALS (Latent Association Leaning Score), a zero-shot metric that projects visual-token activations into the model's text-embedding space to measure concept associations per token and layer. Across 15 occupations, over 800 gender-ambiguous images, and four VLMs, internal representations and outputs often become systematically decoupled: models often encode a female association internally yet output male. Layer-wise analysis reveals an asymmetric filter: male signal amplifies end-to-end while female signal peaks mid-network and is suppressed before generation. A color ablation shows that culturally loaded visual cues such as clothing color further modulate these internal associations.

Anchoring LLM Gender Bias to Human Baselines: A Cross-Lingual Audit

We audit six large language models (LLMs) for gender stereotyping across English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. Three were developed primarily for English-language use (Claude, GPT, Gemini) and three for East Asian use (DeepSeek, Syn-Pro, HyperCLOVA X). We adopt the HEXACO-100 personality inventory and anchor each model against a cross-cultural human dataset spanning 48 countries to ask not whether LLMs are biased, but how far their gender attributions drift from the populations they are deployed among. Our findings show that their stereotyping spans a range roughly 2.5 times wider than the entire cross-country range found in humans, and the effect can compound across languages. One English-centric model, prompted in Korean, reached 5 times the local baseline, even when the prompt stated the candidate had already been hired, which often dampens human stereotyping. To characterize such behaviors without ranking them, we introduce a four-pattern framework -- concordance, suppression, reorganization, and amplification -- across 24 (model x language) cells. Item-level analysis reveals that translation does not just rescale stereotypes, but changes the attributes tied to it, hiding significant rearrangement under the surface while appearing well-calibrated. Our results ultimately suggest that no single debiasing pipeline is likely to address bias evenly across linguistic boundaries.

Neuron-Level Interventions for Gendered and Gender-Neutral Generation in Language Models

Language models (LMs) can produce gendered language and stereotypes even when given neutral prompts. Most prior work on gender bias in LMs primarily examines gender through a binary lens (feminine vs. masculine), with limited attention to gender-neutral forms, such as they/them pronouns or neutrally phrased job titles. How gender-related signals are encoded in the internal representations of LMs remains an open question. In this work, we study gender-specific neurons in LMs across three categories: feminine, masculine, and gender-neutral. We propose a neuron-level intervention method to identify neurons that are strongly tied to each gender category. We then test these neurons through controlled generation, showing that activating or masking gender-related neurons can steer a sentence toward a target gender form while preserving its original meaning. To evaluate the effectiveness of our gender-intervention approach, we curate two datasets with controlled sentences labeled across all three gender categories and validate the data quality through human evaluation. Experiments on two open-source LMs show that gender-specific neurons are not evenly distributed across model layers; instead, they concentrate heavily in the earliest layers with smaller contributions from later layers. Compared to existing methods, our method achieves more precise gender control, with less leakage into non-target gender categories and stable output quality through two evaluation criteria. Overall, our work examines how gender is encoded in LMs and provides a simple yet effective approach toward controlled gender intervention for both neuron intervention evaluation and gender bias mitigation. GRUFF: LLM Pronoun Fidelity, Reasoning, and Biases in German

Third-person singular pronouns have long been used to study stereotypical biases in language models and to test their abilities to reason about reference. More recently, the interplay between reasoning and bias has been investigated with the task of pronoun fidelity, which assesses models' abilities to correctly reuse a previously-specified pronoun for a discourse entity, independent of other potentially distracting discourse entities mentioned in between. However, such research focuses on English, which is a language with limited grammatical gender and almost no gender agreement. In this paper we contribute a novel, large-scale dataset, GRUFF, to measure pronoun fidelity in German, covering four different gender agreement systems in nouns, and four sets of pronouns. With this dataset, we show that LLMs show strong grammatical agreement for masculine and feminine entities in the absence of explicit context, but not for neopronouns xier and en. Models are generally not robust to distractors, but encoder-only models are more robust in German than in English, reflecting the importance of grammatical gender. Finally, we show that occupational stereotypes in this context are poorly correlated across grammatical cases, and across most models, except ones with closely related architectures. We release all code and data to encourage further work on gender-inclusive language and referential reasoning in German.

The New Pro Se: Generative AI and the Surge in Federal Civil Self-Representation

Since public access to generative AI tools became widespread, federal civil litigation has seen a marked increase in pro se (self-represented) plaintiffs. This paper analyzes that shift using ~2.8 million filings, asking whether the post-GenAI period is associated not only with more pro se filings, but also with detectable changes in complaint text, litigation outcomes, and the composition of pro se litigants. Using civil filing data from FY2008-2025, we find that the federal civil pro se plaintiff rate rose from 11.33% pre-GenAI to 16.94% post-GenAI, a 5.61 percentage-point increase that persists after trend and covariate-adjusted robustness checks. We then focus on Civil Rights and Other Statutory cases, where the increase is especially pronounced, and link case metadata to pro se complaints. Drawing on stylometric AI detection indicators, we develop an interpretable measure of AI-consistent drafting. Against a threshold calibrated to the pre-GenAI baseline, the net AI-flagged share is 13.9% of post-GenAI non-form complaints. Analysis of the AI-flagged complaints shows that they are more citation-dense, disproportionately associated with first-time rather than repeat filers, and geographically unevenly distributed. This composition pattern suggests that AI-consistent drafting is not merely a repeat-filer phenomenon; it also includes a modest, suggestive increase in name-inferred female plaintiffs. We find no evidence of improved win rates; in fact, AI-flagged complaints are more likely to be dismissed and to terminate at earlier procedural phases. These findings raise new questions about access to justice and court screening burdens, and sharpen the distinction between legal formality and legal efficacy.

Cultural Fidelity in English-to-Hindi Translation: A Preservation-Fluency Frontier for Gender Recoverability

Generative translation systems are cultural technologies because they decide how socially meaningful cues are rendered within culturally specific grammatical systems. We study one concrete notion of successful cultural translation: when an English source explicitly encodes gender, an English-to-Hindi translation should preserve the recoverability of that cue unless the source itself is ambiguous. We evaluate this criterion on a 37,345-instance benchmark spanning twelve categories and show that five systems frequently erase gender through ergative and honorific constructions. We then introduce two mechanism-aware inference-time interventions. The first, the Source-Aware Reranker (SAR), prefers candidates that avoid gender-neutralizing syntax. The second, the Phenomenon-Aware Reranker (PAR), preserves gender through targeted lexical marking even when ergative syntax remains. Across GPT-4o-mini and Sarvam, PAR improves target-subset accuracy from 11.07% to 54.47% and from 15.99% to 49.66%, respectively. Human evaluation shows that PAR increases gender preservation from 10.3% to 81.3%, but reduces mean fluency from 4.36 to 3.37. These findings place the two interventions on a preservation and fluency frontier rather than supporting a single dominant solution, and show how culturally situated generation can require explicit tradeoffs among fidelity, fluency, and stylistic naturalness.

Insidious by Design: Implications of Large Language Model algorithmic bias for the Global South

\begin{quote} The biases in Large Language Models' (LLMs) outputs remain inadequately theorised, particularly from the perspective of the Global South. This article reports on a small-scale exploratory study in which identical prompts were submitted to four major LLMs (ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Copilot), firstly, prompting for stories using names suggestive of specific racial and gender communities, and secondly asking questions about `development'. Drawing on critical AI scholarship and postcolonial theory, we argue that LLM outputs are patterned in ways that reproduce racial hierarchies, gender asymmetries, and Western-centric epistemic frameworks. We argue that these biases are insidious: they operate below the threshold of both obvious error and overt prejudice, and instead are subtly embedded in narrative structure and emotional template. Simply put, women, in LLM narratives have rich interior lives, while men make plans. Black people face hardships while white people navigate the world with agency. And explanations as to the economic world order fail to consider Southern explanations. The models perform plausibility while reproducing dominance. We conclude that universities require structural critique of these technologies rather than unreflective adoption, and that critical AI literacy must engage seriously with questions of whose knowledge systems are reproduced and legitimated, or marginalised and undermined.

EquiSumm : A Gender Bias-Aware Framework for Inclusive Tweet Summarization

While social media platforms, such as Twitter, provide a medium for large-scale opinion sharing during news events, it is manually impossible for individuals or media agencies to process the vast volume of content to identify key viewpoints. In order to resolve this, several automatic summarization techniques have been proposed to condense large collections of tweets into concise and informative summaries. However, these algorithms do not explicitly consider demographic fairness. Several existing research works have developed automated summarization approaches that can provide a holistic overview of the key aspects and major opinions shared on social media platforms related to a news event. However, these approaches do not explicitly consider different forms of demographic representation, such as gender, which can lead to biased summary representation. In this paper, we propose EquiSumm, which considers the gender aspect of the shared opinion to generate a summary, and our experimental analysis on two major datasets indicates the performance effectiveness with respect to existing research works.

Audience Engagement with Arabic Women's Social Empowerment and Wellbeing: A Decadal Corpus

This paper presents the Arabic Women and Society Corpus, a ten year collection of 252,487 public Arabic Facebook posts related to women's empowerment and social wellbeing. The corpus was collected from 51,660 pages across 77 countries between 2013 and 2024, resulting in more than 267 million user interactions. Each post includes engagement metrics such as shares, comments, and emotional reactions, providing a unique view of audience sentiment and social attention. The data were processed using an automated pipeline with language identification, normalization, and metadata cleaning to ensure reliability and reproducibility. The corpus enables large scale analysis of gender discourse, social reform, and emotional engagement across Arabic dialects. It supports research in Arabic natural language processing, computational social science, and digital communication studies. The dataset and accompanying documentation will be released under request for research use.

Gender Differences in AI Literacy Workshop Outcomes and Deepfake Engagement

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy initiatives expand in K-12 settings, understanding how gender shapes student baseline perceptions, tool-use, and responsiveness to interventions is essential for equitable curriculum design. This study examines gender differences in AI literacy, safety awareness, and STEM career aspirations among Australian secondary students (Years 7, 8, and 10; N(pre) = 199, n(post) = 136) from two co-educational government schools who participated in a one-day AI literacy workshop. Using statistical regression methods controlling for year level and school, we found that pre-workshop, male students reported significantly higher STEM career interest across all three domains (AI, computer science, and engineering), while female students were significantly more likely to use AI for schoolwork and to seek advice from AI tools. Gender-differentiated patterns also emerged in deepfake behaviours: males were significantly more likely to have created or shared deepfake content. Both genders improved in AI knowledge post-intervention, yet females showed a richer profile of gains: wider conceptual understanding, greater confidence, and meaningful increases in AI and CS career interest that partially narrowed the gender STEM gap. These findings highlight the need for gender-responsive AI curricula, particularly deepfake safety education for male students, and demonstrate that even single-day workshops can narrow gender gaps in STEM aspirations and AI confidence.

Beyond Performance Disparities: A Three-Level Audit of Representational Harm in CelebA

Large-scale facial datasets like CelebA are widely used in computer vision, yet the cultural biases embedded in their labels remain underexplored. Fairness research has distinguished representational from allocational harms, but audits of computer vision datasets have mostly examined categorical labels, leaving open how such harms appear in learned features and model attention. This paper examines CelebA at three levels: dataset structure, learned feature weights, and spatial attention, focusing on how gendered double standards of ageing and beauty are encoded in the data and reproduced in model behaviour. First, hierarchical clustering of 202,599 images shows that the 39 attributes organise into latent trait bundles aligned with cultural archetypes: performative femininity (youth, makeup, adornment) and professional masculinity (ageing, facial hair, formal attire). Female faces, though more often rated attractive overall, incur steep penalties when assigned to ageing or masculine-coded clusters. Second, XGBoost with SHAP analysis reveal gender-specific effects, such as adiposity reducing attractiveness only for females. Third, Grad-CAM finds that predictions for female and younger male subgroups concentrate on mid-face cues, whereas predictions for older males drift toward peripheral cues such as hair and clothing. Older males attain the highest accuracy but the lowest average precision, indicating categorical exclusion of groups outside the dataset's evaluative templates. Cultural double standards thus pass from media representation into dataset labels, feature weights, and model attention, producing two representational harms: hyper-scrutiny of women under a narrow evaluative template, and exclusion of older men from the scheme entirely. Fairness metrics focused on performance disparities mask both, underscoring the need to address representational harm in fairness research.

GKnow: Measuring the Entanglement of Gender Bias and Factual Gender

Recent works have analyzed the impact of individual components of neural networks on gendered predictions, often with a focus on mitigating gender bias. However, mechanistic interpretations of gender tend to (i) focus on a very specific gender-related task, such as gendered pronoun prediction, or (ii) fail to distinguish between the production of factually gendered outputs (the correct assumption of gender given a word that carries gender as a semantic property) and gender biased outputs (based on a stereotype). To address these issues, we curate \gknow, a benchmark to assess gender knowledge and gender bias in language models across different types of gender-related predictions. \gknow allows us to identify and analyze circuits and individual neurons responsible for gendered predictions. We test the impact of neuron ablation on benchmarks for disentangling stereotypical and factual gender (DiFair and the test set of GKnow), as well as StereoSet. Results show that gender bias and factual gender are severely entangled on the level of both circuits and neurons, entailing that ablation is an unreliable debiasing method. Furthermore, we show that benchmarks for evaluating gender bias can hide the decrease in factual gender knowledge that accompanies neuron ablation. We curate GKnow as a contribution to the continuous development of robust gender bias benchmarks.

Towards Trustworthy Audio Deepfake Detection: A Systematic Framework for Diagnosing and Mitigating Gender Bias

Audio deepfake detection systems are increasingly deployed in high-stakes security applications, yet their fairness across demographic groups remains critically underexamined. Prior work measures gender disparity but does not investigate where it comes from or how to fix it systematically. We present the first diagnosis-first framework that identifies bias source before applying targeted mitigation, evaluated on two models, AASIST and Wav2Vec2+ResNet18, on ASVSpoof5. Our diagnosis shows that bias does not stem from imbalanced training data but from acoustic representation differences, gender leakage in learned features, and structural evaluation asymmetry. We test mitigation strategies across in-processing, post-processing and combined families, including novel methods introduced in this work. Adjusting the decision threshold separately per gender reduces unfairness by 54% to 75% at no cost to detection accuracy, and our new epoch-level fairness regularisation method outperforms existing per-batch approaches. Adversarial debiasing succeeds only when gender leakage is localised, and fails when it is diffuse, an outcome correctly predicted by our diagnosis before training. No single method fully closes the fairness gap, confirming that bias sources must be identified before fixes are applied and that fairer benchmark design is equally important

Is She Even Relevant? When BERT Ignores Explicit Gender Cues

Gender bias in large language models has primarily been investigated for English, while languages with grammatical or morphological gender remain comparatively understudied. This paper investigates how and when gender information emerges in a Dutch BERT model trained from scratch, offering one of the first checkpoint-level analyses of bias formation in a Transformer architecture for a language combining overt morphological gender marking and generic forms. By extracting contextual embeddings throughout training, we construct dynamic gender subspaces using linear SVMs to trace when gender becomes linearly encoded and how this encoding evolves over time. Contextual embeddings are often assumed to integrate contextual cues robustly, allowing models to adjust the representation of a word depending on its more local usage. We therefore test whether explicit gender cues in controlled sentence templates (e.g., Zij is een loodgieter ('She is a plumber')) can override learned statistical associations (plumber -> male). Our findings challenge this assumption: although gender becomes clearly linearly separable around epoch 20 and is distributed across multiple embedding dimensions, the model struggles to update its internal gender representation in light of explicit contextual cues in short sentence templates. Stereotypical gender-profession pairings are predicted far more accurately than anti-stereotypical ones, and generic forms in Dutch systematically default to a male interpretation, even when the context explicitly denotes a female referent. Together, our results seem to indicate that contextualization in the representations learned by our Dutch BERT model is not sufficiently dynamic along the probed gender direction: explicit gender cues in anti-stereotypical contexts are not reliably reflected in the resulting representations, resulting in persistent male-default behaviour.

EQUITRIAGE: A Fairness Audit of Gender Bias in LLM-Based Emergency Department Triage

Emergency department triage assigns patients an acuity score that determines treatment priority, and clinical evidence documents persistent gender disparities in human acuity assessment. As hospitals pilot large language models (LLMs) as triage decision support, a critical question is whether these models reproduce or mitigate known biases. We present EQUITRIAGE, a fairness audit of LLM-based ESI assignment evaluating five models (Gemini-3-Flash, Nemotron-3-Super, DeepSeek-V3.1, Mistral-Small-3.2, GPT-4.1-Nano) across 374,275 evaluations on 18,714 MIMIC-IV-ED vignettes under four prompt strategies. Of 9,368 originals, 9,346 are paired with a gender-swapped counterfactual. All five models produced flip rates above a pre-registered 5% threshold (9.9% to 43.8%). Two showed directional female undertriage (DeepSeek F/M 2.15:1, Gemini 1.34:1); two were near-parity; one had high sensitivity with weak male-direction asymmetry. DeepSeek's directional bias coexisted with a low outcome-linked calibration gap (0.013 against MIMIC-IV admission), a Chouldechova-style dissociation between within-group calibration and between-pair counterfactual invariance. Demographic blinding reduced Gemini's flip rate to 0.5%; an age-preserving blind variant left DeepSeek with residual F/M 1.25, implicating age as a residual channel. Chain-of-thought prompting degraded accuracy for all five models. A two-model ablation reveals opposite underlying mechanisms for the same directional phenotype: in Gemini the signal is emergent in the combined name+gender swap, while in DeepSeek the gender token alone carries it. EQUITRIAGE shows that group parity, counterfactual invariance, and gender calibration are distinct fairness properties, that intervention effectiveness is model-dependent, and that per-model counterfactual auditing should precede clinical deployment.

Personality Shapes Gender Bias in Persona-Conditioned LLM Narratives Across English and Hindi: An Empirical Investigation

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in persona-driven applications such as education, customer service, and social platforms, where models are prompted to adopt specific personas when interacting with users. While persona conditioning can improve user experience and engagement, it also raises concerns about how personality cues may interact with gender biases and stereotypes. In this work, we present a controlled study of persona-conditioned story generation in English and Hindi, where each story portrays a working professional in India producing context-specific artifacts (e.g., lesson plans, reports, letters) under systematically varied persona gender, occupational role, and personality traits from the HEXACO and Dark Triad frameworks. Across 23,400 generated stories from six state-of-the-art LLMs, we find that personality traits are significantly associated with both the magnitude and direction of gender bias. In particular, Dark Triad personality traits are consistently associated with higher gender-stereotypical representations compared to socially desirable HEXACO traits, though these associations vary across models and languages. Our findings demonstrate that gender bias in LLMs is not static but context-dependent. This suggests that persona-conditioned systems used in real-world applications may introduce uneven representational harms, reinforcing gender stereotypes in generated educational, professional, or social content.

Calibrated? Not for Everyone: How Sexual Orientation and Religious Markers Distort LLM Accuracy and Confidence in Medical QA

Safe clinical deployment of Large Language Models (LLMs) requires not only high accuracy but also robust uncertainty calibration to ensure models defer to clinicians when appropriate. Our paper investigates how social descriptors of a patient (specifically sexual orientation and religious affiliation) distort these uncertainty signals and model accuracy. Evaluating nine general-purpose and biomedical LLMs on 2,364 medical questions and their counterfactual variants, we demonstrate that identity markers cause a "calibration crisis". "Homosexual" markers consistently trigger performance drops, and intersectional identities produce idiosyncratic, non-additive harms to calibration. Moreover, a clinician-validated case study in an open-ended generation setting confirms that these failures are not an artifact of the multiple-choice format. Our results demonstrate that the presence of social identity cues does not merely shift predictions; it affects the reliability of confidence signals, posing a significant risk to equitable care and safe deployment in confidence-based clinical workflows.

IMA-MoE: An Interpretable Modality-Aware Mixture-of-Experts Framework for Characterizing the Neurobiological Signatures of Binge Eating Disorder

Binge eating disorder (BED) is the most prevalent eating disorder. However, current diagnostic frameworks remain largely grounded in symptom-based criteria rather than underlying biological mechanisms, thereby limiting early detection and the development of biologically-informed interventions. Emerging studies have begun to investigate the neurobiological signatures of BED, yet their findings are often difficult to generalize due to the reliance on hypothesis-driven parametric models, single-modality analyses, and limited data diversity. Therefore, there is a critical need for advanced data-driven frameworks capable of modeling multimodal data to uncover generalizable and biologically meaningful signatures of BED. In this study, we propose the Interpretable Modality-Aware Mixture-of-Experts (IMA-MoE), a novel architecture designed to integrate heterogeneous neuroimaging, behavioral, hormonal, and demographic measures within a unified predictive framework. By encoding each measure as a distinct token, IMA-MoE enables flexible modeling of cross-modal dependencies while preserving modality-specific characteristics. We further introduce a token-importance mechanism to enhance interpretability by quantifying the contribution of each measure to model predictions. Evaluated on the large-scale Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) dataset, IMA-MoE demonstrates superior performance in differentiating BED from healthy controls compared with baseline methods, while revealing sex-specific predictive patterns, with hormonal measures contributing more prominently to prediction in females. Collectively, these findings highlight the promise of interpretable, data-driven multimodal modeling in advancing biologically-informed characterization of BED and facilitating more precise and personalized interventions in neuropsychiatric disorders.

SPAGBias: Uncovering and Tracing Structured Spatial Gender Bias in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) are being increasingly used in urban planning, but since gendered space theory highlights how gender hierarchies are embedded in spatial organization, there is concern that LLMs may reproduce or amplify such biases. We introduce SPAGBias - the first systematic framework to evaluate spatial gender bias in LLMs. It combines a taxonomy of 62 urban micro-spaces, a prompt library, and three diagnostic layers: explicit (forced-choice resampling), probabilistic (token-level asymmetry), and constructional (semantic and narrative role analysis). Testing six representative models, we identify structured gender-space associations that go beyond the public-private divide, forming nuanced micro-level mappings. Story generation reveals how emotion, wording, and social roles jointly shape "spatial gender narratives". We also examine how prompt design, temperature, and model scale influence bias expression. Tracing experiments indicate that these patterns are embedded and reinforced across the model pipeline (pre-training, instruction tuning, and reward modeling), with model associations found to substantially exceed real-world distributions. Downstream experiments further reveal that such biases produce concrete failures in both normative and descriptive application settings. This work connects sociological theory with computational analysis, extending bias research into the spatial domain and uncovering how LLMs encode social gender cognition through language.

The Homogenization Problem in LLMs: Towards Meaningful Diversity in AI Safety

Generative AI models reproduce the human biases in their training data and further amplify them through mechanisms such as mode collapse. The loss of diversity produces homogenization, which not only harms the minoritized but impoverishes everyone. We argue homogenization should be a central concern in AI safety. To meaningfully characterize homogenization in Large Language Models (LLMs), we introduce a framework that allows stakeholders to encode their context and value system. We illustrate our approach with an experiment that surfaces gender bias in an LLM (Claude 3.5 Haiku) on an open-ended story prompt. Building from queer theory, we formalize homogenization in terms of normativity. Borrowing language from feminist theory, we introduce the concept of xeno-reproduction as a class of tasks for mitigating homogenization by promoting diversity. Our work opens a collaborative line of research that seeks to understand and advance diversity in AI.
