SWORD: Wikidata-based Distortions Reveal Hidden Cross-Lingual Inconsistencies in LLM Factual Error Rejection

Modern LLMs demonstrate impressive multilingual performance, yet standard benchmarks primarily reward selecting correct answers rather than evaluating genuine factual understanding. We introduce Systematic Wikidata-based Object-Relation Distortion (SWORD), a benchmark that evaluates whether models consistently reject factual errors across languages. SWORD generates syntactically well-formed but factually incorrect statements in eight widely spoken languages through controlled perturbations of Wikidata triples, ranging from random entity substitutions to semantically plausible property-based selections. Our distortion-based evaluation surfaces two critical insights that remain entirely obscured by conventional benchmarks. First, models counterintuitively achieve higher accuracy on semantically plausible distortions than on nonsensical random substitutions, suggesting reliance on distributional familiarity rather than genuine factual verification. Second, models exhibiting comparable baseline accuracy across languages show substantial performance degradation specifically on (East) Asian languages when presented with distorted statements, with cross-lingual performance gaps reaching up to 28 percentage points (49% relative reduction) in some models. These findings demonstrate that multilingual factual reasoning involves asymmetric capabilities that aggregate accuracy metrics systematically obscure.

Translation Indeterminacy and the Distributional Fallacy

Large language models (LLMs) are commonly associated with the distributional hypothesis, according to which (1) semantic meaning is grounded in distributional patterns of linguistic context, and (2) knowledge of cross-linguistic distributional correspondences allows for successful translation. This paper rejects the first claim as a causal inversion: linguistic distributions reflect patterns arising from meaning-making practices rather than constituting their source. At the same time, it accepts the second claim, arguing that translation -human or machine - can succeed without requiring access to meaning or reference. Knowledge of interlingual distributional correspondence and their inferential organization may be sufficient for translation. The paper develops an ecological-enactivist perspective, according to which reference and meaning are grounded in agent-environment interaction and stabilized through action-grounded concepts, forms of world-involving cognition that current LLMs do not possess.

Perspectives on Cross-Lingual Consistency in LLMs for Medical Questions

Should multilingual LLMs answer medical questions consistently across input languages, or adapt responses to cultural cues? Existing multilingual medical benchmarks usually assume that medically correct answers should remain consistent across languages and treat cross-lingual variation as model error. In contrast, cultural adaptation research argues that appropriate medical answers may legitimately differ across contexts. We review the multilingual medical NLP literature through these two perspectives, we identify three gaps: limited stakeholder perspectives (e.g., of medical professionals), a lack of empirical evidence on which approach better serves users, and no benchmarks capable of distinguishing universally correct from culture-specific cases. To address the first gap, we survey 356 participants across three stakeholder groups (medical, NLP, and anthropology professionals) in three countries (Germany, Spain, and the United States). Anthropologists consistently favor adaptation, while medical and NLP respondents remain divided, with notable divergence between U.S. and European medical professionals. LLMs prompted with profession and country personas fail to reproduce this variation, overestimating cross-lingual consistency preference among NLP and medical personas. We conclude that neither consistency nor adaptation can currently be considered clearly preferable, highlighting the need for empirical evidence on which approach better serves users across cultural contexts.

The Interlingua Hypothesis: LLMs Translate via a Latent Task-agnostic Feature Space

Large language models (LLMs) have recently demonstrated improved machine translation performance over strong supervised baselines. This raises questions as to what mechanisms underlie how LLMs perform machine translation between languages. Motivated by recent interpretability findings--namely, that LLMs use massively multilingual latent feature representations to perform language modeling--we propose the interlingua hypothesis. The hypothesis holds that language models translate by reading a source sentence into a latent feature space, and generate a target sentence by reading from the latent feature space. We show three lines of evidence in support of this hypothesis: (1) variance in BLEU across language pairs is largely predictable from language-specific competences with no language pair-specific interaction terms; (2) many model components are causally influential in both monolingual tasks and translation tasks; and (3) fine-tuning on monolingual data recovers a large proportion of translation improvements relative to fine-tuning on aligned documents. Together, these provide convergent evidence in support of the interlingua hypothesis, and suggest new ways of understanding and improving how LLMs can be leveraged to perform translation tasks.

Enhancing Low-Resource Language Reasoning via High-Resource Language Feature Transfer

Large language models exhibit substantial performance variation across languages, even when solving semantically equivalent tasks. Existing analyses often treat this phenomenon as an observational disparity caused by differences in pretraining data, tokenization, or benchmark coverage. We study a complementary hypothesis: high-resource languages (HRLs) may more reliably elicit latent computations useful for task-specific (i.e. mathematical) reasoning, while lower-resource languages (LRLs) may under-activate those computations despite expressing the same task. To test this hypothesis, we introduce a mechanistic intervention framework for identifying and transferring task-relevant sparse latent features across languages. Using sparse autoencoders over residual-stream activations, we isolate features enriched in successful HRL task-specific reasoning while filtering out source-language and generic-generation features. We then construct steering directions from these features and inject them during LRL inference. The resulting interventions test whether the selected features are functionally involved in the observed reasoning gap: suppressing them should impair source-language reasoning, while activating them should partially recover target-language reasoning beyond random and non-task controls. Our framework reframes some cross-lingual reasoning gaps as failures of mechanism elicitation rather than capability absence, and offers a causally testable route to feature-mediated transfer without translation, fine-tuning, or changing the user-facing language.

Better Decomposition, Free Aggregation: A Synthesizer-Folding Framework for Multilingual Multi-Hop Question Answering

Multilingual retrieval-augmented generation (mRAG) equips large language models with access to globally distributed external knowledge for complex multilingual question answering. Recent approaches either translate retrieved documents into English or the query language to bridge the cross-lingual semantic gap, or decompose a complex query into sub-questions and aggregate the intermediate reasoning process. However, both lines of work suffer from two limitations. First, one-size-fits-all translation alignment, blanket translation discards culturally and linguistically native information unique to the target language, introduces translation noise, and inflates system cost. Second, greedy decomposition and aggregation, uncontrolled decomposition produces redundant sub-questions that compound errors during step-wise reasoning, and the final aggregation over reasoning paths further amplifies these errors. We address both with our method Syfer, a synthesizer-folding framework for multilingual multi-hop question answering that defers translation rather than applying it by default. Syfer first invokes a format-constrained decomposer to produce a sub-question graph in the original language, followed by a decomposition-quality check; when the check passes, sub-questions are answered sequentially under a retrieve-then-answer policy in the target language, and the English translation pathway with bilingual sub-question graph alignment is activated only when the check fails. Experiments across multiple languages show that Syfer attains competitive accuracy while striking a favourable balance between performance and computational cost.

Actions Speak Louder than Words: Measuring Cross-Lingual Policy Retention in Tool-Using Agents

When a tool-using agent is given the same task in a different language, does it still take the same steps? Multilingual evaluation rarely asks: it compares final answers and discards the actions. Yet those actions are the product: they fix cost and latency, decide how the system fails, and are the only auditable part of its behaviour. We make the action policy the measured object across 8 models, 6 parallel benchmarks and 41 languages (2.38M rollouts). The naive measurement fails: five confounds sit between raw trace similarity and any defensible claim, each able to flip a conclusion. Short traces score higher, empty traces score perfectly, unrelated traces agree by chance over half the time, the gap is capped by each model's reproducibility, and a model asked the same question twice in one language answers differently, leaving no baseline. We remove all five, and every correction makes the effect larger. Divergence proves structural, not sampling noise: it survives greedy decoding in every cell and stays flat as temperature rises, even as models grow less self-consistent. Normalised by their own reproducibility, four very different frontier models converge under greedy decoding, each keeping 71-73% of its action policy across languages, with model identity explaining only 5.7% of the variance. Below roughly 10B parameters it breaks down, and the ordering among smaller models is largely an artifact of a chance floor we measure by permutation rather than assume. Agents route non-English tasks through English; this pivot is causally load-bearing, confirmed by a pre-registered prediction across four models, and models will not abandon it when told to. Finally, a single trace-extraction regex, not the model, manufactured a multilingual failure: two worked examples raise one model's measured accuracy twenty-sixfold while its accuracy on readable outputs barely moves.

On the Limitations of Cross-Lingual Consistency in Multilingual Text-to-image Generation

Text-to-image (T2I) generation has achieved remarkable progress in recent years. However, existing research has largely focused on English-only settings, leaving cross-lingual performance gaps and language-specific effects insufficiently explored. To fill this gap, we introduce LingT2I, a benchmark covering 10 widely used languages with 33K prompts, designed to evaluate cross-lingual effects in both content generation and text rendering. Building on this benchmark, we conduct a comprehensive cross-lingual analysis, uncovering linguistic inequality and language-dependent trade-offs across evaluation dimensions. Beyond quantitative evaluation, we further reveal a range of language-dependent generation patterns, highlighting how linguistic factors and their corresponding cultural contexts systematically impact model outputs. Our benchmark and analysis provide a foundation for studying cross-lingual behavior in T2I generation and facilitate the development of more robust and inclusive models. OmnilingualGAIA2: Evaluating the Multilingual Gap in Frontier AI Agents

Agentic benchmarks aim to measure how well AI agents plan, search, execute, and recover within realistic multi-tool environments, but they are almost exclusively in English. As AI agents are globally deployed to a linguistically diverse user base, whether agentic competence measured in English transfers to other languages remains an open question. We introduce OmnilingualGAIA2, a machine-translated expansion (with partial human- expert validation) of the GAIA2 agentic benchmark, covering ten target languages spanning five writing systems, paired with a localised and human-calibrated multilingual verifier. Evaluating seven frontier and open-weight agents, we find a universal cross-lingual gap of 8.8-18.4 pass@3 points that is agent-asymmetric in magnitude, concentrates on tool-orchestration rather than quantitative reasoning, and does not close with model scale. A stratified error attribution decomposes the gap as predominantly model-driven (55%), with a bounded translation-contamination floor of only 6.4% of scenario-language pairs. Human-expert linguistic analysis further identifies morphological cue loss and amplified ambiguity as the primary failure mechanisms in non-Latin-script languages. Our results argue that multilingual agentic evaluation must become a standard part of the reporting protocol for globally deployed agents.

North Africa's Missing Framework: NLP-Driven Mental Healthcare in Algeria and Implications for Low-resource Settings

Mental health disorders are a leading cause of disability worldwide, yet Natural Language Processing (NLP) research for mental healthcare has remained concentrated in high-income, English-language settings. North Africa, and Algeria in particular, is largely absent from this literature despite its unique linguistic, historical, and healthcare context. We present the first conceptual framework examining the potential role of NLP within Algeria's mental healthcare system. Drawing on narrative synthesis of global NLP mental health research, Algerian healthcare literature, and low-resource NLP methodologies, we identify four structural barriers to mental healthcare: the language-of-care gap, geographic inequities in access, stigma-related barriers to help-seeking, and the absence of research and digital infrastructure. We then map existing NLP capabilities to each barrier, outlining their potential applications, implementation constraints, and the technical, institutional, and governance requirements necessary for deployment. Based on this analysis, we propose a research and policy roadmap that prioritizes data resources, multilingual language technologies, evaluation frameworks, and regulatory capacity. Although grounded in the Algerian context, the framework addresses challenges common to many multilingual, low-resource, and post-colonial settings. This work provides a foundation for future research on culturally and linguistically appropriate NLP for mental healthcare and offers a practical roadmap for developing responsible AI-enabled mental health systems in underrepresented regions.

When Is a Steerable Concept Representation Real? Measurement Confounds in a Cross-Family Audit of Neuroscience Parallels in LLMs

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly reported to exhibit human-like neural and cognitive signatures, including concept cells, mental number lines, and cognitive maps. These claims often rely on linear probing and activation steering applied to a single model, yet both methods are highly sensitive to measurement choices. A reported parallel may therefore reflect the model, the measurement procedure, or both. We audit four representative neuroscience-inspired paradigms across 17 models from five families, spanning 0.60.6B to 7272B parameters. Our main experiment examines the causal steerability of concept directions. With raw activation units and a fixed layer and coefficient, steerability appears to increase with model scale, resembling an emergent capability. However, this pattern is produced by an uncalibrated pipeline rather than by a claim established in the steering literature. The trend depends jointly on raw units, the readout metric, and the operating point; correcting any one of these removes it. With residual-norm-comparable interventions and held-out operating-point selection, concept steering remains significant at every scale, but shows no significant trend across the Qwen3 series, although the confidence interval does not rule out a moderate positive slope. The remaining results are mixed. A linear geographic world map is consistently decodable in every tested checkpoint up to 7272B. Number magnitude is strongly encoded, but whether individual neurons appear bell-shaped or monotonic depends on the selection criterion. Language-specific structure is localizable, but the direction of the cross-lingual asymmetry reverses under a different attribution method. These results suggest that the main constraint on AI neuroscience is not a lack of phenomena, but a lack of comparable measurements and adequate controls. We release the protocol, stimuli, and code.

Measuring the Cross-Lingual Comprehension Gap: How the language of the evidence shapes what language models understand

Language models are often evaluated as though capabilities demonstrated in English remain equally available when the same content is presented in other languages. Traditional multilingual benchmarks rarely isolate language while holding content, question, reference answer, model, and evaluation unit constant. We define the Cross-Lingual Comprehension Gap (CLCG) as the reduction in response quality when the same content and question are presented in a target language rather than in English. Using ParallelQA-18, a professionally human-translated parallel corpus, we evaluate five models from five laboratories on a stratified sample of 150 articles across 18 languages (English reference; Portuguese high-resource baseline; 16 targets spanning Joshi et al. 2020 classes 0-4). A within-item design varies only passage language. The primary estimator contrasts English versus pooled target-language Token-F1 micro-means on higher-complexity open-ended questions, with article-cluster bootstrap intervals. The primary pooled CLCG is 0.078 (95% CI 0.072-0.084), about a 17% reduction relative to the English score; the equal-language macro summary is 0.077. Net of Portuguese, the macro gap is 0.016 (95% CI 0.013-0.020). Language-level CLCG is negatively associated with Joshi resource class (rho = -0.594, p = 0.015, n = 16). In blinded paired human evaluations, higher-resource responses are preferred in 61.6% of decisive judgments (estimated preference probability 0.655, 95% CI 0.558-0.741). Capabilities shown in English should not be assumed to transfer equally to other languages; English-centered evaluations may overestimate quality for users of low-resource languages.

ChronoLens: Measuring Language Change Across Time, Languages, and Linguistic Levels

Historical language change affects morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics, yet computational studies typically examine these levels with incompatible representations and therefore cannot determine whether they evolve together across languages. We address this problem by asking how the magnitude and direction of change vary across linguistic levels, languages, and historical periods within a single analytical space. We introduce ChronoLens, a framework that combines frozen multilingual language models, feature-aligned crosscoders, and post-hoc linguistic interventions, and apply it to 44.98 million documents and approximately 17.2 billion tokens from five parliamentary traditions spanning 1803--2026. The resulting sparse representations agree substantially more strongly with linguistic statistics than dense embeddings or a pooled sparse autoencoder (ρ=0.72ρ=0.72 versus 0.290.29 and 0.280.28), and reveal that morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics generally change by comparable amounts within a language, while languages differ markedly in when, how far, and in which direction they change. These findings show that historical language change is a structured, multidimensional process: similar magnitudes can conceal different trajectories, and meaningful cross-linguistic comparison requires measuring both distance and direction.

Cultural Awareness is Represented but Not Decoded: Tracing Mythological Knowledge across 18 Open-Source LLMs

Open-source LLMs reliably name Zeus, Jupiter, and Thor, but recover their counterparts in less-represented traditions like Finnish, Slavic, Egyptian, or Chinese mythology far less consistently. We ask where inside the model this cultural default is produced. On a parallel cross-cultural substrate of Thompson-motif entities, we instrument 18 open-source LLMs from 8 architecture families with linear probing, logit lens, activation patching, and output extraction. The residual stream cleanly distinguishes cultures, well above a name-string baseline, yet the decoder collapses culturally-specific tokens onto dominant-tradition ones. The failure is at readout, not at representation. Asking the same question in the target culture's native language versus English produces failures that cluster within language but decouple across language: the decoder is gated on prompt language. We release a per-entity (probe, output) decomposition framework, a citation-anchored cross-cultural ground truth, a within- versus cross-mode correlation test for language-conditioned readout, and per-entity predictions for all 18 models.

Native Multilingual Chain-of-Thought Reasoning in Low-Resource Southeast Asian Languages

Large Language Models have achieved substantial progress in reasoning capabilities. Yet in low-resource native settings, many suffer from cross-lingual collapse, reverting to English during intermediate steps that require complex logical reasoning. This presents a cold-start bottleneck for policy optimization, whereas standard fine-tuning risks catastrophic forgetting due to cross-lingual representation drift. To address these challenges, we introduce the Onramp-Sequence Cross-Distillation (OSCD), a post-training algorithm that projects high-resource reasoning trajectories into low-resource vocabulary subspaces during generative training rollouts via an integrated translator agentic loop, ensuring the stable and efficient translation of dynamically generated reference samples for fine-tuning. This is coupled with joint-embedding semantic alignment of both reference and target-language reasoning traces, thereby bridging the pairwise cross-lingual representational gaps. Comprehensive evaluations using the AIME25 and HMMT25 benchmarks demonstrate that OSCD yields up to 3.2 times overall improvements in native Southeast Asian languages for mathematical reasoning, of which the joint-embedding semantic alignment component contributes up to 6.4% improvements in linguistic debiasing over translation-only baselines.

A Cross-lingual Comparison of Human and Classification Model Entrainment Behavior in Code-switched Speech Settings

Conversational entrainment is well-studied in monolingual and written contexts, but remains underexplored in spoken code-switching (CSW). We present a novel cross-lingual analysis of entrainment in Mandarin-English, Hindi-English, and Spanish-English dialogue and show that, while lexical entrainment generalizes across language pairs, entrainment over acoustic-prosodic and CSW style aspects exhibits context-specific variation. We build on these findings by asking whether classification models capture these human behavioral patterns. Applying feature importance and ablation analyses, we find that classical and Transformer-based classifiers detect entrainment reasonably well but consistently prioritize features other than those most salient to human entraining behavior. Our approach introduces a human-grounded framework for evaluating model decision-making in multilingual stylistic contexts, and suggests future challenges for developing conversational agents capable of producing naturalistic code-switched speech.

The Tokenizer Tax: Quantifying and Explaining the Cross-Lingual Cost of Subword Tokenization for Indian Languages

Large language models (LLMs) process text through subword tokenizers rather than directly reading characters or words. Because these tokenizers are trained predominantly on English-centric corpora, they introduce a systematic and often overlooked disadvantage for many non-English languages. In this work, we quantify this tokenizer tax for Indian languages using the FLORES-200 parallel corpus, measuring tokenization fertility across six widely used tokenizers and fourteen languages. Under cl100k_base (used by GPT-3.5 and GPT-4), Indian languages experience an average 8.0x tokenization tax relative to English, reaching 13.0x for Malayalam, reducing the effective context window to as little as 12% of that available to English users for equivalent semantic content. We identify the primary mechanism behind this disparity: failed byte-pair merges that leave text fragmented into single-byte tokens, with merge failure strongly correlating with tokenizer tax (Pearson r = 0.89). We further show that this phenomenon is not an inherent property of Indic scripts but a consequence of tokenizer design. Multilingual tokenizers such as XLM-R and OpenAI's o200k_base reduce the average Indic tokenizer tax by 73%, demonstrating that the disparity is largely remediable. Beyond token statistics, we quantify a practical consequence by showing that, under fixed context budgets, Indian-language documents preserve substantially less original content than equivalent English documents. Finally, we examine the relationship between tokenizer fertility and reading comprehension performance on the Belebele benchmark, finding that the apparent correlation is largely explained by language resource availability rather than tokenizer behavior alone.

Do LLM Debates Repeat Arguments Differently Across Languages?

LLM debate is usually evaluated by final answers, yet transcripts reveal whether later turns develop new arguments or return to earlier claims in new wording. We study this process with \textit{prior-argument similarity}, which compares extracted argument units with earlier units in the same debate. In controlled eight-turn debates over 71 motions, six languages, and four model agents, Chinese is the only tested language with a consistently positive gap relative to English across three multilingual embedding models. The gap persists across agents, turn positions, regression adjustment, metric variants, extraction-length controls, a second-extractor subset, and cross-encoder tail rescoring. Manual calibration shows weak item-level alignment but a high-similarity tail enriched for substantive repetition. A diversity-aware prompt lowers \textit{prior-argument similarity} across languages, yet does not significantly narrow the Chinese--English gap. Multilingual debate evaluation should therefore measure argumentative development over time and report both average and gap terms.

Simple Language Normalization Wins: Cross-Lingual Speaker Verification for the TidyVoice 2026 Challenge

Cross-lingual mismatch remains a key source of overall degradation in modern speaker verification. The TidyVoice2026 Challenge targets this setting with text-independent verification, comprising 3,666 training and 808 development speakers in 40 languages and 2,200 evaluation speakers in 38 unseen languages, without language labels at test time. Starting from the official SimAM-ResNet34 baseline pretrained on VoxBlink2 and VoxCeleb2 and fine-tuned on TidyVoice, we revisit Nuisance Attribute Projection (NAP) as a simple language-normalization step in the embedding space. We estimate a compact language subspace from cross-language same-speaker differences and project embeddings onto its orthogonal complement before cosine scoring with Adaptive Symmetric score normalization. This reduces development EER from 2.97% with cosine and 2.70% with AS-Norm to 2.18% and yields a Codabench evaluation score of 8.40, showing that simple back-end language normalization can rival more complex systems.

Language-Routed RAG and Direct Option Scoring for Multilingual Financial QA: DS@GT at FinMMEval

We present DS@GT's submission to FinMMEval 2026 Task 1, a multilingual financial exam question answering benchmark spanning English, Spanish, Greek, Chinese, and Hindi. Financial certification exams such as the CFA, EFPA, and CPA demand structured domain reasoning that standard NLP benchmarks do not capture, and this challenge compounds across languages where retrieval and representation infrastructure is underdeveloped. We build a retrieval-augmented pipeline on LangGraph that detects query language and retrieves semantically relevant exemplars from a 30,209-entry multilingual knowledge base using BGE-M3 embeddings and FAISS indexing. The system then scores answers via Retrieval-Augmented Direct Scoring (RADS), reading next-token log-probabilities over candidate option letters rather than generating free-form output. For low-resource languages, we fuse per-language and cross-lingual retrieval indices using weighted Reciprocal Rank Fusion. Model selection is language-routed: Qwen3-14B for Arabic, Chinese, and Hindi; Qwen2.5-14B for English; and Llama-3.1-8B for Greek, a routing derived from empirical ablations that reveal substantial language-asymmetric performance gaps. Notably, chain-of-thought prompting significantly degrades Greek accuracy (90.7% to 20.9%), and enabling Qwen3's default thinking mode collapses Arabic RADS performance to near-chance levels. Our results indicate that effective multilingual financial reasoning requires language-aware retrieval, model routing, and deliberate scoring strategy selection.

LKValues: Aligning Large Language Models with Sri Lankan Societal Values

Value alignment of Large Language Models (LLMs) has been shown to be culturally biased toward Western norms. This results in the mishandling of local values in multilingual societies such as Sri Lanka that have their unique cultural dynamics. Existing benchmarks overlook Sri Lankan-contextualized values in its official language Sinhala, hindering culturally sensitive evaluation and fine-tuning. To bridge this gap, we propose LKValues, the first survey-grounded resource suite for Sri Lankan value alignment. From a trilingual survey of 205 respondents, blending adapted global frameworks and LLM-elicited local constructs, we derive 40 majority-endorsed societal values. Using these values, we construct LKvaluesIT, a Sinhala-English news-derived instruction corpus containing 150k scenario-based instances, and LKvaluesBench, a value-sensitive evaluation benchmark of 1,000 instances. We evaluate a set of proprietary and open-weight LLMs with LKvaluesBench. We fine-tune three open-weight base models (Qwen3.5-4B-Base, Qwen3.5-9B-Base, and Aya-Expanse-8B-Base). Our experiments show that newer and larger LLMs still exhibit low-resource and cultural value-alignment gaps. LKValues fine-tuning improves Qwen-family models in English and Sinhala, reducing invalid outputs and cross-lingual disparities, though gains remain model-family dependent. These highlight LKValues efficacy in embedding Sri Lankan values, offering a replicable pipeline for low-resource, country-specific pluralist value alignment. Inference-Time Steering for Cross-Lingual Factual Consistency in LLMs

Although Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate remarkable multilingual fluency, their internal knowledge representations remain disproportionately biased toward high-resource languages. This leads to cross-lingual factual inconsistency, where they shift their empirical answer distributions based solely on the prompt language. We investigate whether these biases can be mitigated at inference time, forcing an English-prompted model to answer as if it were queried in target languages (German, Spanish, Bulgarian), and evaluate four intervention strategies: zero-shot contextual steering (persona prompting), internal representation manipulation via Contrastive Activation Addition (CAA), and lightweight weight modification via Direct Preference Optimization (DPO) trained on benchmark-derived factual data as well as conceptual generalization data. To assess alignment, we curate a multilingual factual dataset alongside a novel generalization benchmark comprising culturally rooted queries to determine whether factual interventions transfer to broader target-centric preferences. Experiments on Gemma 3 12B Instruct reveal persona prompting to be the strongest overall intervention, balancing efficacy, safety, and out-of-domain generalization. While CAA yields sharp inconsistency benchmark shifts, it is configuration-sensitive and risks knowledge degradation. DPO-based adapters offer permanent, yet narrower and less transferable gains. These findings suggest that cross-lingual inconsistency is at least partly a selection problem, and that simple contextual interventions may outperform more invasive methods for robust, transferable alignment.

Don't Want Your LLM to Recommend Nuclear Strike? Try Asking It in Japanese

Large language models are increasingly used in strategic and advisory contexts, yet their safety alignment is typically evaluated in English only. We test nine models from six providers and ask whether the language of a prompt can change a model's decision in a high-stakes scenario. We use single-turn game-theoretic vignettes in which a model advises a nuclear-armed nation on whether to strike a defenseless opponent. The prompt is intentionally amoral and strategically identical across languages. We find that Japanese prompts reduce launch rates in the Claude model family: Claude Sonnet 4.6 drops from 40% to 0% in scenarios where the strike is unnecessary and from 93% to 17% in contested scenarios, with minimal effect when the strike is strategically rational. The effect extends to Gemini Pro 3.1 (53% to 13%). A cross-language experiment isolates the mechanism: when instructed to reason in Japanese in an English prompt, launch rates drop from 93% to 37%. It is the language the model is asked to reason in, not the language of the input, that drives the effect. When reasoning in Japanese, models spontaneously generate moral vocabulary (''moral cost'', ''millions of lives'') that is entirely absent from the prompt. Five other models show no language effect, but they launch in nearly every condition regardless of language. The effect requires a model that already hesitates in English. These results show that LLM safety behavior is language-dependent, and that evaluating in English alone can miss both risks and safeguards encoded in other languages.

Tokenizing Crosslingual Homographs

Multilingual language models rely on shared subword vocabularies to represent multiple languages within a limited number of token units. While such sharing is often useful, it can also create cases in which identical surface forms are treated too uniformly across languages, even when their meanings or usage differ. We investigate this limitation through cross-lingual homographs and false friends, and examine whether introducing language information earlier in the tokenization process can improve their treatment. We propose a simple tokenizer-level intervention based on language cues: language-specific characters replacing initial characters of shared-vocabulary words, reducing common identity during vocabulary construction. In intrinsic analysis, we find through tokenizer-level statistics that BPE and UnigramLM often treat cross-lingual homographs in a largely language agnostic way, whereas the context-sensitive SaGe tokenizer diverges more strongly; our intervention removes this gap. In downstream English-to-X machine translation, our cues yield modest improvements in several settings, especially under BPE, although the effect is not consistent across all languages and evaluation sets. Overall, the findings suggest that adding lightweight language information at the tokenizer level is a promising direction for further exploration.

Safety That Does Not Transfer: Cross-Lingual Clinical Correctness Drift in Deployable Medical Language Models

Safety evaluation of large language models is conducted predominantly in English and predominantly on frontier systems. Neither condition describes how such models are encountered in low-resource health settings, where small quantised systems are run locally and queried in local languages. We ask whether clinical safety established in English transfers to Hausa, and whether any failure is attributable to the language, the clinical task, or the class of model that low-resource deployment admits. Matched English-Hausa question pairs were built for three conditions of high burden in northern Nigeria: malaria, sickle cell disease, and tuberculosis, probing knowledge recall, emergency triage, a leading question inviting a contraindicated action, and a traditional-remedy claim. Six models were evaluated: five locally deployable systems of 4-9 billion parameters, two medically fine-tuned, and one frontier system. All 128 responses were scored against Nigerian national treatment guidelines by two fluent Hausa speakers working independently and blind to one another. Among locally deployable models, mean clinical correctness fell from 1.57 in English to -0.03 in Hausa, on a scale where 2 denotes a correct answer and -1 an actively harmful one. The frontier model moved from 2.00 to 1.75 and produced no response judged harmful in either language. Drift was consistent across all three conditions. Inter-rater agreement was substantial for clinical correctness (kappa = 0.70); agreement on harm was initially poor (kappa = 0.22) and is examined in detail. Because a frontier model answers the same questions competently in Hausa, the deficit is a property neither of the language nor of the clinical material, but of the deployable tier.

Q-BridgeNet: A Quantization Network for Cross-Lingual Sign Language Translation

Most sign language translation (SLT) methods focus on isolated native sign-spoken pairs (e.g., American Sign Language - English). Extending language-specific SLT models to multilingual translation would improve accessibility by enabling communication across diverse sign and spoken language communities. However, existing multilingual SLT approaches still struggle to learn a unified model that minimizes cross-lingual conflicts while capturing shared cross-lingual semantics and preserving language-specific variations across different sign languages. Therefore, we propose Q-BridgeNet, a unified framework for multilingual SLT that jointly mitigates cross-lingual conflicts across both the sign language and spoken language sides. On the sign language side, Q-BridgeNet learns discrete Q-units via adaptive segmentation and residual vector quantization: a shared base codebook provides language-agnostic semantic primitives, while language-specific residual codebooks refine heterogeneous signing semantics. On the spoken language side, a multilingual LLM is fine-tuned to operate in the Q-unit space, leveraging cross-lingual priors to enable a unified SLT model. Experiments on PHOENIX14T, How2Sign, and CSL-Daily show that Q-BridgeNet effectively mitigates cross-lingual conflicts, achieving state-of-the-art performance on native sign-spoken pairs while also demonstrating strong generalization to non-native pairs. Unified Gradient Projection: Language-Balanced Continual Learning for Multilingual Low-Resource ASR

Large-scale pretrained ASR models such as Whisper exhibit strong multilingual capabilities. However, fine-tuning on low-resource languages often causes catastrophic forgetting. Although continual learning mitigates this issue, existing methods struggle to regulate cross-task interference in multilingual settings, where dominant languages bias optimization. We propose Unified Gradient Projection (UGP), which constrains parameter updates using reference gradients from language-balanced replay in a unified projection space. By equalizing per-language contributions in the projection, UGP reduces dominant-language bias and improves cross-lingual stability. We further show that combining gradient-level projection with data-level replay yields complementary gains in stability and plasticity. Across diverse low-resource language groups and model scales, UGP enables effective adaptation while substantially mitigating forgetting. On Whisper-large-v3, it achieves near-zero average forgetting.

SPLIT: Cross-Lingual Empathy and Cultural Grounding in English and Ukrainian LLM Responses

Large Language Models are increasingly deployed in emotional-support contexts and crisis-related situations. Nevertheless, their cross-lingual abilities in these circumstances remain underexplored. Existing benchmarks emphasize multilingual performance but rarely examine crisis-related empathy and cultural grounding in low-to-mid-resource languages. We introduce SPLIT, a 500-prompt benchmark designed to evaluate LLM consistency in generating emotionally grounded responses across five categories: Stress, Panic, Loneliness, Internal Displacement, and Tension. We evaluate three technically diverse LLMs across three dimensions: Empathetic Accuracy, Linguistic Naturalness, and Contextual & Cultural Grounding. The framework aims to assess and compare the quality of LLM responses in both English and Ukrainian languages, as well as to explore the reliability of the LLM-as-a-jury paradigm. Our findings reveal that Gemini-2.5-Flash and LLaMA-3.3-70B-Instruct degrade when transitioning to Ukrainian, while DeepSeek-V3 remains comparatively stable within our benchmark. We additionally find that human and AI evaluators agree weakly on empathy and naturalness but diverge on cultural grounding. We further argue that producing Ukrainian text is not equivalent to producing Ukrainian emotional support. Our findings may assist in the future development of more culturally tailored benchmark designs, as well as encourage a stronger emphasis on human-centered evaluation.

Cross-lingual Relation Extraction with Large Language Models: Zero-Shot, Few-Shot, and Fine-Tuned Evaluation on Romanian

Relation extraction (RE) for low-resource languages is typically constrained by the lack of annotated corpora. We investigate the feasibility of cross-lingual RE for Romanian by combining automatic dataset translation with large language model (LLM) inference. We translate the SemEval-2010 Task 8 benchmark from English to Romanian using an LLM-based translation pipeline and evaluate Gemma 4 31B under zero-shot, few-shot, and QLoRA fine-tuned configurations, against four encoder baselines spanning 125M to 560M parameters: XLM- RoBERTa (base and large), Romanian BERT, and RoBERT- large. We assess two task formulations: relation classification with marked entities and end-to-end extraction. Our results show that Romanian incurs a 3 to 5 percentage point (pp) drop relative to English in prompt-only settings, that few-shot prompting provides marginal gains over zero-shot, and that QLoRA fine-tuning improves macro F1-Score by more than 22 percentage points in both languages while reducing the cross-lingual gap from 3.3 to 1.4pp. The encoder baselines come within 1-4pp of QLoRA Gemma on Romanian despite being 50-250 times smaller, with monolingual Romanian BERT at 125M parameters matching multilingual XLM-R at 278M. The case for using a 31B model for single-task RE on Romanian is therefore weak in deployment scenarios where compute matters. We release the translated dataset, evaluation code, and trained models.

How Bilingual Are SSL Speech Models? Cross-Lingual Probing of Articulatory Encoding with Finnish and Russian EMA

SSL speech models capture rich phonetic, prosodic, and acoustic patterns from raw audio, yet how they encode articulatory information across diverse languages remains unclear. Using EMA data from bilingual Finnish-Russian speakers, we evaluate cross-lingual correlations between SSL latent representations and articulatory movements. Models achieve strong prediction performance (Pearson r up to 0.68) even with approximately 5 minutes of training data, with multilingual models outperforming monolingual ones. Intermediate layers encode articulatory features most effectively, and tongue movements are more predictable than lip movements. We also assess the impact of task type (read versus spontaneous speech) and language proficiency, finding higher accuracy for structured tasks and strong generalization across proficiency levels. These results enhance the interpretability of SSL models and show their potential for speech-technology applications.

SARA: Unlocking Multilingual Knowledge in Mixture-of-Experts via Semantically Anchored Routing Alignment

Sparse Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architectures have emerged as an increasingly influential paradigm as they offer a strategic balance between parameter scalability and computational efficiency. However, low-resource languages, which suffer from a scarcity of high-quality training data, often have their tokens routed to different experts than those predominantly activated by high-resource inputs, which limits cross-lingual expert sharing. This cross-lingual routing divergence consequently hinders their efficacy in multilingual contexts. To address this issue, we propose SARA (Semantically Anchored Routing Alignment), a framework designed to transfer specialized capabilities from high-resource languages as anchors to low-resource languages. SARA explicitly aligns the routing distribution of multilingual inputs with high-resource semantic anchors using a symmetric Jensen-Shannon (JS) divergence constraint. Unlike traditional distillation methods that operate on output logits, SARA directly aligns the internal routing distributions of MoE layers, encouraging mechanistic consistency in expert selection across languages. We conduct experiments on 2 LLMs across 5 low-resource languages and 3 benchmarks. Experiment results demonstrate that SARA outperforms standard instruction tuning, e.g., +0.8% on Qwen3-30B-A3B and +1.2% on Phi-3.5-MoE-instruct on Global-MMLU. Further analyses show that SARA effectively addresses performance bottlenecks in low-resource languages, providing a scalable pathway to enhance multilingual capabilities in sparse architectures.

Same Lesson, Different Story: Cross-Lingual Reconstruction of Cultural Narratives in Large Language Models

The evaluation of cultural grounding context becomes complex when multiple cultures convey the same moral lesson. This challenge is particularly relevant to large language models (LLMs), which produce narratives across a wide range of languages and cultural contexts. However, it remains uncertain whether these models preserve culturally grounded meaning when equivalent moral lessons are conveyed through distinct cultural forms. This study introduces a multilingual evaluation narrative framework that integrates a cross-linguistic collection of 414 proverbs spanning 15 languages and uses four LLMs to generate 13k narratives. By employing semantically equivalent proverbs as culturally grounded prompts, the analysis assesses whether models preserve meaning across languages, how cross-lingual conditioning influences narrative realization, and whether different model families converge on similar interpretations. Results indicate that cross-lingual prompting largely preserves proverb-level semantic meaning while systematically redistributing agency, social positioning, and narrative structure. Additionally, strong inter-model convergence is observed in both monolingual and cross-lingual settings, suggesting that multilingual LLMs rely on shared semantic abstractions despite architectural and linguistic differences. These findings shed light on the need for more comprehensive evaluations of cultural grounding. Relying exclusively on semantic similarity in multilingual narrative assessments may overestimate cultural preservation by neglecting culturally meaningful variations in narrative expression.

Cross-Lingual Exploration for Parametric Knowledge

Parametric knowledge in Large Language Models is not equally accessible across languages. As a result, standard inference techniques often struggle to surface localized facts, leading to failures in cross-lingual knowledge transfer and consistency. In this work, we investigate techniques for accessing hidden factual knowledge by exploring cross-lingual prompting strategies. We identify four inherent dimensions of cross-lingual exploration that directly govern parametric knowledge retrieval and evaluate them on multilingual factual benchmarks covering 17 typologically diverse languages. Our results demonstrate that cross-lingual exploration significantly improves knowledge transfer and factual recall, representing a more efficient compute Pareto frontier than native-language scaling. Furthermore, we observe corresponding improvements in cross-lingual consistency, exceeding what can be explained by accuracy gains alone. Overall, our work establishes multilingual prompt exploration as a highly effective inference-time strategy for unlocking latent parametric knowledge.

Phonemes to the Rescue: Multilingual Tokenization Based on International Phonetic Alphabet

Multilingual language models often exhibit performance disparities across languages that can arise as early as the tokenization stage. Widely-used subword tokenization approaches favor high-resource languages, and tokenizer-free methods still yield longer sequences for scripts with a higher bytes-per-character ratio. To address these shortcomings, we propose to use the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) as a language-agnostic input representation for multilingual tokenizers. IPA provides a compact symbol inventory, greater cross-lingual character overlap, and a more balanced byte-per-character distribution across languages. We train matched pairs of text vs. IPA subword tokenizers across 24 languages and 14 scripts and demonstrate that IPA tokenizers consistently improve tokenization quality, especially for non-Latin scripts, and generalize more effectively to unseen languages and scripts.

LLM Parameters for Math Across Languages: Shared or Separate?

Large language models (LLMs) exhibit substantial cross-lingual variation in mathematical reasoning performance, but it remains unclear whether these differences reflect language-specific parameters or a shared mechanism that manifests differently by language. We present a cross-lingual mechanistic analysis of mathematical reasoning in LLMs, enabling us to localize and compare model parameters that support mathematical reasoning across languages. We find that the extracted math-associated parameters exhibit partial cross-lingual overlap, with the strongest overlap concentrated in intermediate model layers. We further observe that English consistently produces the largest set of math-relevant parameters, whereas lower-resource languages reveal smaller sets of relevant parameters. These results suggest that math-related behavior in multilingual LLMs is neither fully language-invariant nor fully language-specific, but instead exhibits partial cross-lingual parameter overlap with systematic language-dependent differences.

ChLogic: Evaluating Robustness of Logical Reasoning in Chinese Expressions

Large language models perform increasingly well on standardized logical reasoning benchmarks, but whether this ability remains robust beyond English is unclear. We introduce ChLogic, an English--Chinese aligned benchmark that tests whether models preserve logical reasoning performance when the same latent logical structure is expressed in English and diverse Chinese surface realizations. Built from formal logical templates, the benchmark contains three data sets: (i) the General aligned set, derived from 60 General Propositions across nine template families; (ii) the Difficult aligned set, derived from 40 Difficult Problems; and (iii) the Chinese-only set, covering 15 language-specific phenomenon types. Each aligned item pairs one English reference expression with five Chinese realizations. Experiments on Qwen3, Ministral, and GLM models reveal a persistent English--Chinese performance gap. Back-translation from standard Chinese into English often improves performance on the General aligned set, but produces mixed effects on the Difficult aligned set, where Qwen3-32B and GLM-5.1 perform worse after translation. These results indicate that Chinese surface realization, translation artifacts, and model-specific behavior jointly affect multilingual logical reasoning. Overall, ChLogic provides a useful stress test for the robustness of multilingual reasoning.

Beyond English: Uncovering the Multilingual Gap in Vision-Language-Action Models

Vision-Language-Action models have recently demonstrated promising capabilities in learning generalist robot policies from large-scale multimodal data. However, most existing VLA systems are trained and evaluated primarily with English instructions, leaving their ability to understand and execute instructions in other languages largely unexplored. While the underlying large language models often possess multilingual capabilities, it remains unclear whether these multilingual capabilities transfer to VLAs during training. In this work, we present the first systematic study of multilingual instruction following in VLA models. We first construct multilingual instructions by extending existing benchmarks with translations of their instructions. Using these instructions, we evaluate several representative VLA models across a range of tasks in simulation settings. Our experiments reveal a significant multilingual gap: models trained primarily on English instructions exhibit substantial performance degradation when evaluated on other languages, even when the underlying language backbone is multilingual. We provide several findings and analyses to understand the multilingual gap. Cross-lingual transfer behavior analysis shows that performance drops correlate with both instruction understanding and action execution. Representation analyses suggest that multilingual instruction-caused representation shifts may contribute to the multilingual gap. Motivated by these findings, we further explore strategies to improve multilingual performance in VLAs. We propose a simple yet effective multilingual fine-tuning approach, Multilingual Principal Component Alignment, which leverages Principal Component Analysis to get the principal component subspace and align projected multilingual representations, effectively reducing the multilingual performance gap.

When Language Representations Interact: Separability and Cross-Lingual Effects in LLMs

Large language models exhibit strong multilingual capabilities, however, their internal representations are difficult to interpret. Understanding these interactions is important for ensuring reliable behavior in multilingual systems. Recent work has shown that causal-geometric structure can explain how certain concepts are encoded as approximately linear and separable directions, but whether this framework extends to multilingual models, where language identity is correlated and hierarchical, is underexplored. We apply causal-geometric analysis to multilingual LLMs, studying 28 bilingual contrasts across three models, allowing us to analyze when languages behave as approximately independent factors and when structured dependencies persist. We find evidence that language concepts admit stable linear representations that are largely separable under a covariance-adjusted (causal) inner product, with structured deviations reflecting linguistic similarity. Moreover, languages within the same family (such as Germanic or Romance) exhibit a simplex-like geometric structure, suggesting hierarchical organization. These results extend causal-geometric interpretability to multilingual settings and provide insight into how separability and similarity may exist in multilingual LLM representations, motivating interpretability analyses that diagnose when and how structured dependencies between concepts can be anticipated. This has implications for trustworthy deployment, as residual structure between languages may lead to unintended cross-lingual effects when models are monitored or intervened upon.

When Similar Means Different: Evaluating LLMs on Arabic--Hebrew Cognates

Arabic and Hebrew, as closely related Semitic languages, share many words with similar surface forms, including true cognates, false friends, and modern loanwords. These lexical relationships create ambiguity for cross-lingual semantic interpretation, as similar forms may correspond to shared, divergent, or borrowed meanings. To evaluate whether LLMs can make these distinctions, we introduce SemCog Bench, a curated benchmark of 1,858 Arabic--Hebrew word pairs with sentence-level annotations for cognate identification and semantic disambiguation. We evaluate a diverse set of open-source and proprietary LLMs across multiple input representations and contextual settings. Our results show reliance on surface-form similarity, with weaker performance on false friends and wide variation on loanwords. We further find that context and scale yield model-dependent gains, while original-script inputs generally perform best. Our findings reveal limitations in cross-lingual form-meaning reasoning and establish SemCog Bench as a benchmark for cross-lingual lexical semantics. Our code and data are publicly available.

The Shibboleth Effect: Auditing the Cross-Lingual Distributional Skew of Large Language Models

This study investigates cross-lingual distributional skew (the Shibboleth Effect) in frontier large language models (LLMs) subjected to sustained adversarial conditions. We develop a multi-agent geopolitical wargame, the Cerulean Sea Crisis, a synthetic maritime territorial dispute designed to mirror the structural dynamics of Eastern Mediterranean conflicts. Six frontier models (GPT-4o, Llama-4, Mistral-Large, Gemini-3.1-Pro, Qwen3.6-Plus, and DeepSeek-R1) participate in a between-groups experiment (N = 10 games per arm, K = 5 rounds per game) in which the sole manipulation is the language of play (English versus Turkish), producing 586 validated statements. A zero-shot classifier assesses behavioral dispositions along two continuous dimensions: Concession Rate and Coercive Rhetoric. The results are heterogeneous. Llama-4 shows a substantial, Holm-corrected increase in coercive rhetoric under Turkish (delta = +0.800, p = .002), whereas Gemini-3.1-Pro displays an equally large decrease (delta = -0.750, p = .005). DeepSeek-R1 exhibits a similar negative shift (delta = -0.860, p = .006) and provides chain-of-thought evidence consistent with a buffering mechanism. GPT-4o shows no detectable effect (delta = +0.130, p = .614). These findings indicate that cross-lingual behavioral skew is contingent on model architecture and training regime rather than a universal property of Western-origin LLMs. We identify two distinct buffering mechanisms, chain-of-thought institutional anchoring and multilingual RLHF alignment, and discuss their implications for integrating LLMs safely into diplomatic and crisis-management settings.

A Comparison of SSL-Based Feature Extractors and Back-End Classifiers for Spoofing Detection: A Multi-Corpus Training and Cross-Linguistic Analysis

Voice biometric systems face growing threats from spoofing attacks, yet the evaluation of detection models remains inconsistent across datasets. To investigate these unpredictable fluctuations, we conduct a comprehensive benchmark of four self-supervised learning feature extractors paired with four back-end classifiers. We compare the hierarchical local feature extraction of ResNet with the global sequence and relational modeling of attention and graph-based back-ends. Through multi-corpus training across three scenarios and six evaluation datasets, our empirical analysis yields two critical findings. First, we expose a domain bias within the ASVspoof 5 dataset, showing that naive data scaling actively degrades performance. Second, our cross-linguistic analysis reveals that fine-tuning with just 8 hours of target-language data enhances detection robustness. Together, these findings emphasize the critical need for domain-aware and language-specific adaptation in spoofing detection.

When Languages Disagree: Self-Evolving Multilingual LLM Judges

Multilingual LLM-as-a-judge is widely used to evaluate model outputs across languages, but suffers from cross-lingual inconsistency (Fu and Liu, 2025). Existing methods typically treat this inconsistency as noise and mitigate it through voting or aggregation. In this work, we instead show that multilingual inconsistency can provide complementary evaluation signals. Our oracle analysis finds that sampling judgments across languages yields a higher performance upper bound than single-language judging, indicating that different languages potentially include complementary judgments. Motivated by this finding, we propose SEMJ, a self-evolving multilingual judge that leverages cross-lingual inconsistency for iterative refinement. SEMJ constructs multilingual variants of each input, collects independent judgments and rationales, and feeds inconsistent outputs back for self-reflection and re-evaluation. Experiments on multiple benchmarks show that SEMJ consistently outperforms voting and reflection baselines in both accuracy and cross-lingual consistency. Further analysis shows that inconsistency triggers useful re-evaluation, which improves judgment quality.

Improving Cross-Lingual Factual Recall via Consistency-Driven Reinforcement Learning

Large language models (LLMs) trained predominantly on English data encode substantial world knowledge, yet often fail to express it reliably in other languages, a phenomenon known as cross-lingual factual inconsistency. To study and address this, we introduce PolyFact, a large-scale parallel multilingual factual QA dataset containing 100K Wikidata-grounded facts across 12 typologically diverse languages. Using PolyFact, we compare light continual pretraining (CPT), supervised fine-tuning (SFT), and reinforcement learning via Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) for improving cross-lingual factual recall in Qwen-2.5-7B and OLMo-2-1124-7B. We find that GRPO consistently outperforms SFT, improving both cross-lingual consistency and generalization to unseen languages, while CPT on parallel data yields limited additional gains. Mechanistic analyses further show that GRPO reorganizes multilingual routing by reducing language specialization in MLP layers and attention heads, thereby promoting more shared cross-lingual representations. Lingo_Research_Group at SemEval-2026 Task 9: Evaluating Prompt Variants for Polarization Detection

Our submission presented in this paper is for SemEval-2026 Task 9: Multilingual Text Classification Challenge - Polarization Detection and it covers all three subtasks: (1) binary polarization detection, (2) polarization type classification and (3) polarization manifestation identification. We adopt a systematic approach of research on short designed prompts by considering twelve designed prompts that are different in terminology clarity, detail of the definition, guidance of reasoning and in-context examples use. The experiments are conducted using aya-101 and Gemma3-27B, with the latter chosen for the submission at the end of the development through performance considerations. Our system has an average macro level F1-score of 0.762 on Subtask 1, 0.587 on Subtask 2 and 0.444 on Subtask 3 with the average accuracy of 0.819, 0.678 and 0.498, respectively, on the official test set averaged among 22 languages, respectively. With cross-task and cross-lingual analysis, we demonstrate that prompt-based approaches can be used effectively to detect coarse grained polarization but encounter more and more difficulties as far as fine-grained and multi-label sociolinguistic classification is concerned.

When Meaning Travels: A Granular Lens on Hybrid-MoE's Role in Idiomatic Understanding for Language Models

In the contemporary epoch of multilingual education, learning idioms provides a fascinating gateway towards creativity, cultural values, historical context, and diverse perspectives inherent to various linguistic traditions. This paper showcases the navigation of retaining figurative and cultural semantics in low-resource Southeast Asian languages such as Hindi, Bengali, and Thai, where culturally rich idioms pose significant obstacles for computational modeling and cross-linguistic transfer due to their deep metaphorical complexity. To tackle such complexity, we present Varnika, a reconstructed multimodal idiom corpus comprising 3,533 multilingual idioms, enriched with seven idiomatic tones aligned with both textual and visual representations. Additionally, to infer informative idiomatic understanding, we introduce a Hybrid Mixture-of-Experts (HybridMoE) framework that embeds multiple idiomatic expert opinions while mitigating expert sparsity by integrating outputs from both selected and unselected experts through controlled hybridization, further augmented with Idiomatic Property Signals via masked multimodal embeddings. To analyze the performance across multiple dimensions, we propose the IDIO-TONE and Idiomatic Validation Score, a three-stage evaluation pipeline measuring (i) literal translation fidelity, (ii) visual-semantic alignment, and (iii) idiomatic meaning retention. Empirical evaluations highlight that HybridMoE achieves 5--6% performance gains across advanced vision language models, demonstrating improved representation of figurative language and culturally embedded meaning in multilingual multimodal settings

Cross-lingual Self-Consistency for Multilingual Reasoning with Language Models

Despite expanding their multilingual coverage, the advanced reasoning capabilities of LLMs remain largely confined to a few high-resource languages like English. To address this, we propose an unsupervised Reinforcement Learning (RL) approach to enhance multilingual reasoning by enforcing cross-lingual self-consistency: the principle that a model should produce the same final answer for equivalent problems in different languages. Existing methods are limited by the scarcity of multilingual reasoning data and show weak generalization to unseen languages. Our approach requires neither gold answers nor parallel data, and it achieves average gains of up to 21.7% on MGSM across 10 languages. In addition, our method demonstrates strong generalization, with an 18.2% mean improvement on MGSM languages unseen during training, and up to 6.2% gain on 3 out-of-distribution benchmarks. These results show the potential of consistency-based methods to improve the multilingual capabilities of LLMs without requiring supervised data.

Multilingual and Cross-Lingual Citation Needed Detection on Wikipedia for Lower-Resource Languages

In automated fact-checking (AFC), check-worthiness detection identifies claims requiring verification based on domain-specific criteria. On Wikipedia, this task instantiates as Citation Needed Detection (CND), which flags claims lacking supporting citations. However, existing research has largely overlooked lower-resource languages, and recent AFC pipelines rely on large language models (LLMs), which are inaccessible to low-resource organizations. We introduce MCN, a multilingual CND corpus spanning 18 languages across three resource levels, on which we conduct an extensive study of small decoder-based language models (SLMs). Our experiments show that SLMs fine-tuned with an encoder-style objective substantially outperform prompted LLMs across languages. We further present one of the first studies on cross-lingual CND, demonstrating that SLMs fine-tuned solely on English claims surpass LLMs, even with little to no target-language adaptation. Our findings have important implications for lower-resource Wikipedia communities and suggest that compact, task-specific models are preferable to LLMs for CND. Do Large Language Models Encode Institutional Experience? Evidence from Cross-Linguistic Moral Reasoning Under Ambiguity

Large language models (LLMs) exhibit systematic differences in moral reasoning across languages, yet the source of this variation remains unclear. We test the hypothesis that languages encode aspects of the institutional environments in which they are spoken, allowing LLMs to inherit institution-specific moral priors through training. Across nine languages spanning a broad gradient of institutional quality, six frontier LLMs, and two preregistered studies, we examine moral dilemmas whose acceptability depends on institutional functioning. In Study 1, explicit institutional framing produced uniformly null results: cross-linguistic moral divergence did not increase in institutionally contingent scenarios, nor did it track institutional differences between language communities. In Study 2, we introduced institutionally ambiguous scenarios in which institutional stakes were present but not explicitly stated. Under these conditions, cross-linguistic moral divergence increased relative to institutionally inert controls and, with one theoretically informative exception, was associated with real-world institutional differences between language communities. Explicit framing again attenuated these effects. These findings suggest that institutional experience may leave detectable traces in language that shape LLM moral reasoning, while also indicating that explicit institutional cues can suppress the expression of those differences.

Anchoring LLM Gender Bias to Human Baselines: A Cross-Lingual Audit

We audit six large language models (LLMs) for gender stereotyping across English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese. Three were developed primarily for English-language use (Claude, GPT, Gemini) and three for East Asian use (DeepSeek, Syn-Pro, HyperCLOVA X). We adopt the HEXACO-100 personality inventory and anchor each model against a cross-cultural human dataset spanning 48 countries to ask not whether LLMs are biased, but how far their gender attributions drift from the populations they are deployed among. Our findings show that their stereotyping spans a range roughly 2.5 times wider than the entire cross-country range found in humans, and the effect can compound across languages. One English-centric model, prompted in Korean, reached 5 times the local baseline, even when the prompt stated the candidate had already been hired, which often dampens human stereotyping. To characterize such behaviors without ranking them, we introduce a four-pattern framework -- concordance, suppression, reorganization, and amplification -- across 24 (model x language) cells. Item-level analysis reveals that translation does not just rescale stereotypes, but changes the attributes tied to it, hiding significant rearrangement under the surface while appearing well-calibrated. Our results ultimately suggest that no single debiasing pipeline is likely to address bias evenly across linguistic boundaries.

XLGoBench: Detecting cross-lingual skill gaps with algorithmic tasks

We introduce a set of synthetic algorithmic tasks to detect cross-lingual gaps in the abilities of large language models. Our benchmark is commensurate across languages, since it requires models to perform the same underlying task in different languages; scalable, since each task can be generated at varying levels of complexity allowing it to be adapted to models with different capabilities; quantifiable, since every task admits an objective notion of correctness; and transparent, since tasks are generated from simple templates that can be readily audited for translation errors. Because our benchmark focuses on algorithmic tasks, differential performance is a sufficient -- but not necessary -- indicator of cross-lingual gaps. Nevertheless, we show through extensive experiments that our benchmark exposes persistent cross-lingual gaps in multiple state-of-the-art models.

When English Rewrites Local Knowledge: Global Narrative Dominance in Large Language Models

Large language models (LLMs) are widely used as cross-lingual knowledge interfaces. However, culturally grounded questions often reflect globally dominant narratives rather than local contexts. We study this failure mode as \textit{global narrative dominance} in Bangla, a low-resource cultural context. We introduce \texttt{CulturalNB}, a dataset of 717 manually curated Bengali cultural instances with parallel Bangla--English question--answer pairs and supporting evidence, metadata, and sociocultural annotations. Using question-only and evidence-based prompting, we evaluate nine state-of-the-art LLMs with human and two independent LLM judges across metrics for cross-lingual consistency, language anchoring, global substitution, institutional bias, and epistemic perspective coverage. Results show that questions asked in English systematically increase global substitution and institutional framing while reducing local perspective coverage. Local evidence improves factual consistency and perspective coverage, but does not eliminate language-induced epistemic shifts. These findings suggest that cultural failures in LLMs are not only missing-knowledge errors but also failures of grounding and narrative prioritization.

Multi-Legal-Bench: Evaluating LLMs on Legal Reasoning Across Jurisdictions, Languages, and Legal Traditions

Legal NLP benchmarks overwhelmingly evaluate a single language or aggregate tasks that differ fundamentally across jurisdictions, making cross-lingual comparison impossible. We introduce Multi-Legal-Bench, the first cross-jurisdictional legal benchmark that evaluates identical tasks across six countries (Ukraine, France, Netherlands, Poland, Czech Republic, Lithuania), four language families, and 134 million court decisions. The benchmark defines five tasks court-type classification, judgment form classification, case-outcome prediction, legal norm extraction, and cause category prediction mapped to structured metadata from national court registries, forming a deliberately sparse 5x6 task-jurisdiction matrix (20 of 30 cells filled). We evaluate 7 frontier LLMs under zero-shot and 3-shot prompting via AWS Bedrock, with 4 additional small/medium models (3-12B) for scaling analysis. Our results reveal that: (1) task-dependent few-shot effects discovered in Ukrainian replicate across all jurisdictions; (2) no single model dominates any language rankings shift with both task and jurisdiction; (3) cross-lingual few-shot transfer does not follow language proximity: UA->FR (Romance, -2.1 pp) transfers better than UA->PL (Slavic, -13.7 pp), with label-set alignment predicting transfer quality better than language family; and (4) tokenizer fertility, despite a 2.3x spread, does not significantly predict cross-lingual accuracy (r=-0.27, p=0.14), suggesting that model architecture and pretraining data dominate tokenizer efficiency. We release all data, prompts, and model predictions.

Evaluating Cross-lingual Knowledge Consistency in Code-Mixed vis-a-vis Indian Languages using IndicKLAR

Large language models recall knowledge reliably in English but often fail on the same query posed in a lower-resourced language -- a crosslingual consistency gap that remains underexplored for Indian languages and their code-mixed counterparts. To study this gap, we introduce IndiKLAR, an Indic extension of the KLAR-CLC benchmark covering 18 of the 22 scheduled Indian languages and pairing them with code-mixed variants for 11 widely used language pairs, with native-speaker verification of both monolingual and code-mixed variants for these 11 settings. This three-way alignment offers a unique opportunity to examine how knowledge recall consistency varies across the spectrum of English, code-mixed, and native Indian language inputs. Evaluating across nine open-weight models, we find that the native-language accuracy gap to English can reach \sim0.50, while code-mixed inputs close most of it -- bringing performance within \sim0.05 of English without any model-level intervention. Motivated by this, we evaluate several prompting strategies that vary in how language conversion is exposed, including a two-stage translate-then-answer setup, a one-stage joint translation-and-answer prompt, and Translate-in-Thought (TinT) -- a single-step strategy in which the model converts the input internally and emits only the final answer. Across the performance trajectory native \rightarrow code-mixed \rightarrow English, we identify a consistent flip point -- the boundary between incorrect and correct prediction -- that lies between the native and code-mixed settings. Interestingly, this holds whether the trajectory is induced by the input surface form or by the model's internal conversion process.

A new semantically annotated corpus with syntactic-semantic and cross-lingual senses

We describe a new sense-tagged corpus for word sense disambiguation. The corpus is constituted of instances of 20 French polysemous verbs. Each verb instance is annotated with three sense labels: (1) the actual translation of the verb in the english version of this instance in a parallel corpus, (2) an entry of the verb in a computational dictionary of French (the Lexicon-Grammar tables) and (3) a fine-grained sense label resulting from the concatenation of the translation and the Lexicon-Grammar entry.

Simorgh at SemEval-2026 task 7: Region-Aware Hybrid Retrieval for Low-Resource Cultural Reasoning in Multilingual Question Answering

Although Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate excellent capabilities and performance for general reasoning tasks within the general public domain, they may face challenges with culturally grounded knowledge within languages with limited digital and textual data. In this paper, we investigate culturally grounded multiple-choice question answering with the BLEnD benchmark, which consists of a multilingual corpus of 30 languages and covers various socio-cultural domains, such as cuisine, sports, family, etc. We propose a region-aware hybrid retrieval approach that combines BM25 lexical matching and dense semantic similarity with regional weighting heuristics to improve the relevance of the answer. The retrieved documents are used to construct a structured prompt for the Qwen3-14B quantized model with logit-based deterministic answer selection. The experimental results show improvements to cross-lingual stability with the hybrid retrieval approach over pure parametric inference for culturally grounded question answering. However, there are still notable performance gaps between languages with more and less training data. This shows that the limitations of the retrieval augmentation approach are not entirely overcome by the training data imbalance problem.

KZ-SafetyPrompts: A Kazakh Safety Evaluation Prompt Dataset for Large Language Models

Kazakh is underrepresented in resources for evaluating the safety behavior of large language models. We present KZ-SafetyPrompts, a Kazakh prompt dataset for safety evaluation across eleven categories covering common risk areas such as self-harm, violence, child exploitation, sexual content, racist content, radicalization, and regulated goods or illegal activities. The dataset contains 5,717 prompts written natively in Kazakh (Cyrillic), organized by category, with English translations for cross-lingual analysis. Prompts resemble realistic user queries, often in a teen or child style, and are phrased as intent prompts without procedural instructions. We document the writing protocol, labeling procedures (including borderline-case decision rules), and quality-control steps (schema standardization, completeness checks, and deduplication). We also align the categories with widely used safety taxonomies to support integration with existing evaluation pipelines. Baseline results with GPT-4o show an overall refusal rate of 28.2%, varying from 5.5% to 53.8% across categories, indicating that Kazakh prompts expose category-specific safety gaps not captured by English-only evaluation.

Hubness, Not Anisotropy, Drives Cross-Lingual Retrieval Asymmetry in Multilingual Embedding Models

Multilingual embedding models are deployed under the assumption that cross-lingual retrieval is symmetric: if a query in language A retrieves its translation in language B, the reverse should also hold. In practice it does not. Using a parallel corpus of 6,518 idiomatic and proverbial expressions in English, Bangla, Hindi, and Arabic, embedded by five production-grade encoders (Gemini, Mistral, OpenAI-L, OpenAI-S, Qwen), we formalise this failure as a deficit in mutual nearest-neighbour reciprocity and test a single mechanistic claim: among the geometric pathologies of multilingual spaces, hubness, not anisotropy, centroid drift, or magnitude, is the dominant causal driver. Across five pre-registered experiments with falsification conditions specified in advance, hub mass dominates a joint regression on reciprocity (49.5% dominance share, 1.68x the next predictor; partial R^2 = 0.302 versus 0.003 for anisotropy), while a hub-aware score correction (CSLS) closes 63.5% of the worst-to-best reciprocity gap and yields a mean within-model effect size 130x larger than surgical hub-vector ablation. The latter contrast pinpoints the mechanism: hubness is a pathology of the similarity metric, not of individual hub vectors. We resolve the well-known anisotropy-hubness paradox by showing the two are statistically dissociable, and we recommend replacing cosine similarity with CSLS as the default retrieval metric for multilingual embedding pipelines.

CroCo: Cross-Lingual Contrastive Preference Tuning on Self-Generations

Prior work establishes that controlled contrastiveness between self-generated responses from large language models, set via reward scores, improves downstream preference tuning in English. We extend this method to multiple languages and evaluate two models across a total of 14 high and low-resource languages on a diverse set of tasks. Our central finding is that cross-lingual contrastive preference tuning on self-generations (CroCo) transfers without language-specific preference annotation. A reward model trained on English preferences (atop a multilingual base) produces useful within-language rankings across most languages, and pairing in either a monolingual or multilingual setting improves over each model on the majority of setups while preventing the catastrophic forgetting of supervised fine-tuning. We observe that the gains require on-policy data. Off-policy responses reduce the benefit and online preference optimization fails to improve over the offline variant. Specifically, on structured tasks, our method matches or exceeds the base in 6/7 languages for EuroLLM-9B and 4/7 settings for Aya-3B. On open-ended generation, evaluated by two judges, both tuned models win 28/30 times against their respective base across 15 evaluated languages (high and low-resource). Overall, we show promising directions for multilingual preference tuning using self-generations.

WhoSaidIt: Human-LLM Collaborative Annotation for Text-Based Multilingual Speaker-Attribute Classification

Annotating speaker attributes from text is inherently ambiguous, particularly in multilingual settings where demographic and social cues are implicit and culturally variable. We propose a human-large language model (LLM) collaborative re-annotation framework for stabilizing multilingual speaker-attribute labels under practical resource constraints. Starting from a noisy corpus, we use LLMs to surface recurring annotation rationales through iterative interaction with experts, and apply disagreement-focused sampling for targeted re-annotation. Using this framework, we construct WhoSaidIt, a multilingual dataset covering nine speaker-attribute labels. We quantify divergence between original and revised annotations, benchmark recent LLMs, and analyze the effect of explicit rationales on model behavior. Our results reveal substantial cross-lingual differences in annotation decisions and demonstrate both the strengths and limitations of LLMs in speaker-attribute classification.

AI-Associated Lexical Shifts Across 34 Languages: Cross-Lingual Convergence and Diachronic Uptake in News Writing

AI-associated lexical shifts have been documented mainly in Scientific English. We extend this work to 34 languages in the WMT News Crawl corpus, refining a split-halves continuation diagnostic that compares GPT-4.1 continuations with matched human gold-standard text. For each language, we derive ranked AI-overused lemmas using log prevalence ratios. We find substantial cross-lingual semantic convergence: semantically related concepts recur across typologically diverse languages, with 'emphasize'-type verbs appearing in 24 of 34 languages. Embedding-based and manual analyses support this pattern. We also examine diachronic uptake in news writing before and after ChatGPT's release. Tracking each language's top 20 AI-overused items, we find prevalence increases in 26 of 34 languages from 2020-2021 to 2023-2024, with a mean change of +15.1%, whilst matched baseline words show no comparable increase (-4.5%). In 10 languages with longer historical coverage, longitudinal analyses show post-2022 increases that exceed the modest shifts observed in earlier periods, though with smaller effect sizes than in Scientific English. We validate our approach extensively, including across seeds, model variants, data sizes, model families, and more. Our findings are consistent with the view that AI-associated lexical preferences extend beyond English and may exert cross-lingual homogenising pressure on global language use.
