Korean Culture into LLM Alignment: Toward Cultural Coherence

Cultural-aspect work on large language models is dominated by a negative target: which outputs to suppress. We argue that a constructive counterpart is also needed, a working definition of what a culturally coherent response is rather than only what it must avoid, and instantiate it for Korean. We design an alignment-data pipeline around a prompt-based LLM seed generator that expands a Korean harm taxonomy, with a Korean-culturally-adapted safe-response policy at its centre: a per-category guideline grounded in Korean legal frameworks, social norms, and interpretive conventions, against which three frontier models each produce a candidate response. DPO fine-tuning on the resulting triplets improves the Korean cultural safe rate across six open-weight LLMs while causing no large degradation on Korean general-capability benchmarks, and qualitative outputs show fine-tuned models naming Korean statutes and institutional procedures and, where appropriate, supplying constructive Korean-context information alongside refusal.

Exploring LLMs for South Asian Music Understanding and Generation

Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have shown promising results in music understanding and generation tasks. However, existing works remain confined to Western tonal traditions, offering little insight into whether current LLMs can handle structurally distinct low-resource musical traditions. We present the first systematic evaluation of LLM competence in South Asian classical music, a tradition governed by raga, tala-based melodic constraints that impose fundamentally different structural principles from Western harmony-driven music. We ground our evaluation in Hindustani classical theory and Bengali classical forms, including Rabindra and Nazrul Sangeet -- representative low-resource traditions within South Asian classical music. For music understanding evaluation, we introduce a 504-question-answer benchmark spanning raga grammar, cultural knowledge, and symbolic notation reasoning, evaluating 33 LLMs where frontier models such as Gemini 2.5 Pro achieve 85-90% accuracy, while most open-source models remain in the 23-40% range. For music generation, we design a five-level controlled prompting framework and find that even the strongest model produces stylistically faithful outputs only 40% of the time. These results reveal that structural validity and stylistic faithfulness in music generation are distinct objectives and highlight an open challenge for culturally grounded music modeling.

Auditing LLM-Governed Social Robots with Culture-Specific Moral Gradients

LLM-governed social robots increasingly decide who receives real-world assistance first. As prioritization norms vary across cultures by age, status, and group size, failure to calibrate pluralistically can scale into unequal access. Yet LLM moral audits remain English-centered, rarely test embodied contexts, leaving pluralistic calibration as an urgent diagnostic gap amid intensifying LLM-robot deployment. We introduce a gradient-based audit framework for multilingual evaluation of LLM moral trade-off behavior against cultural preference gradients. Grounded in nine cross-domain social robotics reviews (>8,000 papers), we derive symmetry-controlled scenarios across care, education, and services, translating the Moral Machine Experiment's "whom to spare" into "whom to assist first" dilemmas with preserved identity trade-offs (many vs. few; young vs. old; higher vs. lower status). We audit four LLMs across four country-language pairs in four prompting regimes (57,600 decisions), benchmarked against country-specific MME preference gradients. Ordinal concordance tests whether models differentiate cultural contexts; a governance typology maps vulnerabilities in gradient differentiation, directional tendency, and deliberation. We find persistent, culturally asymmetric gradient tracking failures that prompting alone cannot reliably correct: quality calibration is nearly twice as strong for Western-language decisions as for Chinese and Japanese; high determinism in majority-first trade-offs often erases cross-cultural gradients; partial sensitivity to age- and status-based norms risks sidelining minorities. Prompting effects are uneven; only contrastive exemplars yield consistent gains, while reasoning-only prompts can worsen tracking. Our results motivate multilingual, pluralistic audits as an LLM-robot pre-deployment gate and suggest model factors are a more robust lever than prompting alone.

SEA-NLI: Natural Language Inference as a Lens into Southeast Asian Cultural Understanding

Frontier LLMs perform well in Western contexts, but remain poorly tested on underrepresented cultures such as those in Southeast Asia (SEA). Existing NLI benchmarks are largely Western-centric, translation-derived, or monolingual, limiting their ability to measure culturally grounded reasoning. We introduce SEA-NLI, a native, culturally grounded NLI benchmark covering eight SEA countries in English and native regional languages, verified by native speakers. Across 17 encoder and decoder models, we observe a low performance from all models, especially for knowledge-intensive categories such as Languages and Science and Technology. Our analysis shows that failure cases mainly stem from missing SEA cultural knowledge: SEA-adapted models and culture-aware prompting improve performance, while CoT prompting offers limited gains.

Not What, But How: A Framework for Auditing LLM Responses across Positioning, Generalization, Anthropomorphism, and Maxims

Large language models (LLMs) are being increasingly used to answer subjective, information-seeking questions, where users are sensitive to how responses are communicated, not just whether the answers are correct. Existing LLM evaluations for subjective cultural queries largely focus on factual correctness, ignoring how the response is framed. To this end, we introduce FRANZ, an automated FRAmework for respoNse characteriZation to conduct communicative audit of LLM responses along four dimensions: cultural positioning, use of generalizing language, anthropomorphic cues, and adherence to conversational maxims. To enable this evaluation, we contribute SQUARE - a corpus of 376k subjective questions sourced from 57 subreddits, and mapped to 7 countries and 19 question categories. We demonstrate FRANZ's applicability by scoring responses from three open-weight LLMs. We observe that LLMs show statistically significant differences in the frequency with which they employ each response characteristic. Unlike single-dimensional audits, FRANZ reveals that insider positioning and anthropomorphism are positively coupled, with the degree of coupling varying by country, providing a diagnostic lens for identifying framing divergences.

AI as a Tool for Simulation-Based Experiments in Literary Studies

Generative artificial intelligence (AI) systems open new possibilities for experimentation in literary studies via controlled, grounded, large-scale, low-cost simulations of cultural production. Current systems have not yet been shown to produce high-quality, book-length narrative texts that reliably reflect arbitrarily specified cultural constraints or stylistic features. But there exists substantial relevant research on each of the components required for literary-historical simulation. These include the use and validation of AI systems as proxies for differentiable human populations; the narrative and stylistic properties of AI-generated texts; the stability and coherence of multiagent, multiturn AI simulations of human actors; and technical methods through which to alter in predictable ways the knowledge and behavior of generative systems. Together, these areas could provide a starting point for more ambitious AI-based modeling of cultural systems of literary production. We describe the possibilities and challenges of simulation-based experiments in literary studies, summarize the current state of the art in relevant fields, and explain key technical aspects of the work. To provide an example directly relevant to literary scholars, we present the results of experiments on literary text generation, including comparisons to high-status, human-authored novels. Our results include the first demonstration of (limited) in-distribution outputs by AI models in this domain. We conclude with a description of future work on full counterfactual literary-historical simulations using AI.

CARTE: A Benchmark for Mapping Language Model Knowledge Across France

We introduce CARTE 1 (Culturally Anchored Regional-Territorial Evaluation), a multiplechoice benchmark for evaluating the ability of large language models (LLMs) to perform fine-grained reasoning over geographically grounded and regionally differentiated knowledge within France. While prior benchmarks focus on national-level cultural understanding, they largely overlook intra-country variation and the need to distinguish between closely related regional contexts. CARTE addresses this gap by introducing 2,431 questions spanning the 13 metropolitan regions of France and covering 14 thematic domains, including culture, language, demographics, economy, environment, and mobility. We further introduce CARTE-LV, a subset targeting Linguistic Variation across French regions, enabling focused evaluation of language-related differences. We evaluate 27 LLMs ranging from 1B to 12B parameters under few-shot settings. Our experiments reveal performance disparities across regions and model scales, suggesting systematic gaps in pretraining coverage and limited robustness to intra-national variation.

CultureForest: Understanding and Evaluating Cultural Norm Grounded Reasoning in LLMs

Existing research largely reduces cultural intelligence in LLMs to a knowledge-level problem, overlooking whether models can effectively utilize their acquired knowledge in realistic scenarios. To bridge this gap, we introduce CultureForest, a benchmark for \textit{Cultural Norm Grounded Reasoning}. Each question is grounded in a small set of atomic norms, enabling verifiable and attributable evaluation. CultureForest comprises 5,378 examples across 8 domains and 53 countries/regions, and supports a progressive evaluation from multiple-choice to open-ended generation. Extensive experiments reveal that even top-tier models degrade substantially in open-ended settings, accompanied by pronounced cross-region disparities. Through targeted analysis, we uncover several consistent patterns: (1) test-time reasoning yields limited gains and may exacerbate inequity; (2) models exhibit highly shared regional preference structures; (3) model responses are markedly conservative, especially under stricter cultural constraints; and (4) by disentangling cultural knowledge acquisition from cultural reasoning, we show that while LLMs possess substantial cultural knowledge, their performance is further bottlenecked by its effective use. These findings point to a necessary shift from knowledge-centric evaluation toward measuring knowledge-grounded reasoning.

Worlds Within Words: Translating Culture in Ancient Chinese Texts with Multi-Agent Coordination

Large language model (LLM)-based machine translation has advanced cross-cultural communication, yet it still struggles with culture-loaded words (CLWs) in ancient Chinese texts. The challenge extends beyond lexical alignment to deciding when and how culture-dependent knowledge should be explicated for readers lacking relevant background. Literal translation often preserves surface forms while missing underlying concepts, whereas over-explicitation harms conciseness and readability. To address this problem, we formulate CLW translation as a selective explicitation task and propose \textbf{MACAT}, a \textbf{M}ulti-\textbf{A}gent \textbf{C}ulture-\textbf{A}ware \textbf{T}ranslation framework that dynamically identifies culturally salient phrases and injects concise explanatory knowledge when necessary. MACAT further incorporates a quality-aware reranking module for candidate selection and a multi-round evaluation agent that assesses translations across terminological precision, readability, fidelity, cultural preservation, and cultural explicitation. Experiments on traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) classics and the \textit{Analects} show that, under a unified GPT-5.4 evaluation setting, MACAT consistently outperforms both the backbone model and general-purpose MT baselines on 100 TCM documents and a 20-chapter subset of the \textit{Analects}.

Quantifying the Salience of Geo-Cultural Values for Pluralistic Safety Alignment

Safe global deployment of AI models requires alignment with human values that vary across cultures. Yet rater pools in safety evaluation datasets remain largely geographically homogeneous, failing to capture geo-cultural differences. Further, it remains unclear whether such differences persist after controlling for demographics such as age, gender, and ethnicity. Through a meta-analysis of safety datasets, we find that most do not report geo-cultural information, and those that do lack a unified methodology to jointly analyze geo-cultural and demographic correlates. Using the Inglehart-Welzel dimensions of cross-cultural variation, we demonstrate via multilevel modeling that cultural zone membership explains variance in safety ratings beyond standard demographics (p<0.05 across 6 datasets). Moreover, our analysis indicates that roughly 10% of items in the datasets we examined are culturally sensitive: likely to be misclassified as safe without adequate cultural representation. We evaluate LLMs as both rater surrogates and triage tools, finding that current LLMs do not reliably stand in for raters, though they can help prioritize culturally sensitive items for human annotation. Our findings motivate more culturally pluralistic safety evaluation and offer practical takeaways to support it.

Evaluation of Conversational Agents: Understanding Culture, Context and Environment in Emotion Detection

Valuable decisions and highly prioritized analysis now depend on applications such as facial biometrics, social media photo tagging, and human robots interactions. However, the ability to successfully deploy such applications is based on their efficiencies on tested use cases taking into consideration possible edge cases. Over the years, lots of generalized solutions have been implemented to mimic human emotions including sarcasm. However, factors such as geographical location or cultural difference have not been explored fully amidst its relevance in resolving ethical issues and improving conversational AI (Artificial Intelligence). In this paper, we seek to address the potential challenges in the usage of conversational AI within Black African society. We develop an emotion prediction model with accuracies ranging between 85% and 96%. Our model combines both speech and image data to detect the seven basic emotions with a focus on also identifying sarcasm. It uses 3-layers of the Convolutional Neural Network in addition to a new Audio-Frame Mean Expression (AFME) algorithm and focuses on model pre-processing and post-processing stages. In the end, our proposed solution contributes to maintaining the credibility of an emotion recognition system in conversational AIs.

ExCAM: Explainable Cultural Awareness Metrics

Evaluating the cultural awareness of large language models is crucial to ensure the fairness of generated text and the generalizability of applications across the world. Recent benchmarks explore cultural goods like food or values like behavior in stressful situations through the lens of question answering or text generation tasks. However, creating these benchmarks requires time-intensive and costly human annotations. Also, benchmarks that evaluate cultural awareness in free text are scarce and often rely on dated evaluation mechanisms. To address this gap, we introduce ExCAM, an Explainable Cultural Awareness Metric, which is, to our knowledge, the first dedicated evaluation metric that identifies, rates and explains cultural errors in instruction-output pairs. To train and evaluate ExCAM, we introduce ExCAM40k, a dataset comprised of nine existing benchmarks that we reformat and enhance with synthetic errors. Compared to several baselines, including GPT-5, ExCAM achieves the highest error detection rate with up to 80% accuracy on a balanced test set. Therefore, ExCAM opens the pathway towards fine-grained and explainable cultural evaluation of free text.

Cultural Binding Heads in Language Models

LLMs often default to equal treatment across cultural groups, even though context warrants differentiation: this is a lack of difference awareness. Using mechanistic interpretability and a factorial design on the N4 cultural appropriation benchmark from Wang et al. (2025), we identify 2-3 mid-layer attention heads per model that contribute causally to cultural binding across eight models (base and instruct versions of four architectures). Cultural binding is the process of associating a cultural item with its related identity. Knockout of the identity-to-item edges on these heads lowers the binding strength by 9-23%. The identified heads transfer from instruct to base models, suggesting that cultural binding is created during pre-training. An αα-scaling shows a graded dose-response. Moderate amplification steering at generation (α=23α= 2-3) increases cultural differentiation accuracy by 1-3 pp while leaving reasoning on culturally neutral questions mostly intact. A knowledge probing task shows that models know 3-6 times more than they act upon, indicating that the bottleneck lies in routing and not knowledge.

Simorgh at SemEval-2026 task 7: Region-Aware Hybrid Retrieval for Low-Resource Cultural Reasoning in Multilingual Question Answering

Although Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate excellent capabilities and performance for general reasoning tasks within the general public domain, they may face challenges with culturally grounded knowledge within languages with limited digital and textual data. In this paper, we investigate culturally grounded multiple-choice question answering with the BLEnD benchmark, which consists of a multilingual corpus of 30 languages and covers various socio-cultural domains, such as cuisine, sports, family, etc. We propose a region-aware hybrid retrieval approach that combines BM25 lexical matching and dense semantic similarity with regional weighting heuristics to improve the relevance of the answer. The retrieved documents are used to construct a structured prompt for the Qwen3-14B quantized model with logit-based deterministic answer selection. The experimental results show improvements to cross-lingual stability with the hybrid retrieval approach over pure parametric inference for culturally grounded question answering. However, there are still notable performance gaps between languages with more and less training data. This shows that the limitations of the retrieval augmentation approach are not entirely overcome by the training data imbalance problem.

Probing Cultural Awareness in LLMs: A Case Study of Cross-Culture Aesthetic Stylistics

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed in diverse cultural contexts, yet their ability to master aesthetic stylistics, i.e., the strategic use of language to evoke cultural resonance, remains underexplored. We curate C4STYLI, a benchmark of highly stylized translated movie titles and advertising slogans from Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland, to evaluate LLMs via the lens of behavioral recognition and productive competence. Extensive evaluations show that LLMs differ from humans in stylistic recognition, and this recognition ability varies across text domains. In addition, stylistic recognition and generation performance in LLMs are not consistently aligned. To further examine whether LLMs genuinely capture stylistic information in stylistic recognition, we conduct structural ablation with logistic regression probes. We find that, in the Hong Kong setting, stylistic recognition in LLMs relies primarily on surface-level linguistic information rather than stylistic structure. This suggests limited sensitivity to Hong Kong-specific stylistic structure.

JuICE: A Benchmark for Evaluating LLM-Judge in Identifying Cultural Errors

As large language models (LLMs) are increasingly deployed to users around the world, they are integrated into everyday tasks across diverse cultural contexts, from drafting personal communications to brainstorming creative ideas. These tasks are inherently cultural: they require contextual appropriateness, symbolic resonance, and tacit cultural expectations that native speakers draw on instinctively, meaning that a response can be factually plausible yet unmistakably wrong to a local reader. Existing cultural benchmarks have treated culture as a flat set of facts via fact verification or norm entailment methods, and have adopted LLM-as-a-Judge without examining whether they can capture such thick cultural errors. To address this gap, we present JuICE (Benchmark for LLM-Judge in Identifying Cultural Errors), a multilingual dataset of 7,470 span-level annotations of cultural and linguistic errors in long-form LLM responses. It covers 1,050 query-response pairs from four countries (the United States, South Korea, Indonesia, and Bangladesh), in both English and their countries' main languages. Using JuICE, we find that even the strongest LLM-judge achieves only an F1 of 0.52 in the erroneous span detection task. Furthermore, LLM-judges consistently miss thick cultural errors that local residents readily identify. Our findings suggest that robust cultural evaluation must move beyond surface-level detection toward frameworks that account for the depth and situatedness of cultural meaning.

Cultural Value Alignment Via Latent Activation Steering in Large Language Models

Large Language Models (LLMs) often exhibit homogenized cultural perspectives. While the World Values Survey (WVS) provides a gold standard for mapping human values, traditional direct prompting of LLMs on WVS often fails to access the model's latent cultural depth, leading to safety-aligned refusals or neutral responses. Here, we propose a generalizable framework for cultural evaluation and intervention that transitions from abstract queries to scenario-based behavioral probing. By extracting implicit token probabilities across 300 situational dilemmas, we bypass surface-level alignment to map the latent coordinates of LLMs cultural value. We further introduce activation steering to shift these internal alignments during the forward pass without retraining. Across multiple LLMs, we find substantial variation in adaptability and uncover a consistent phenomenon of latent entanglement, where interventions along one cultural dimension induce shifts along another. These results suggest that cultural values are encoded as coupled structures, limiting precise alignment. This work establishes a computationally efficient framework for cultural steering, highlighting the structural complexities when navigating global value with LLMs.

Beyond Literal Translation: Evaluating Cultural Effectiveness in Social Media UGC

Social media platforms enable large-scale cross-lingual communication, but translating user-generated content (UGC) remains challenging due to its informal style, cultural references, and interaction-based expressions. While recent LLMs have improved translation quality, existing benchmarks and metrics often fail to capture whether translations convey intended meaning and cultural resonance in real-world settings. In this work, we introduce CULTURE-MT, a benchmark for social media translation that focuses on both CULtural Transmission and UGC-specific emotion REsonance. CULTURE-MT consists of 1,002 UGC notes across 14 domains, categorized into four types based on culture-loaded symbols and linguistic style features. We also construct UGC-oriented training data to fine-tune Qwen3-8B and Qwen3-32B as baselines. We propose cultural effectiveness as a new evaluation criterion, focusing on expression accuracy and cultural adaptability. Testing 15 models, including the baselines, we find that traditional metrics fail to capture cultural effectiveness. We also observe that cultural effectiveness on base LLMs correlates with model size. Our work provides a comprehensive evaluation system for UGC translation models and will offer an open evaluation platform to advance research in this area. We release the CULTURE-MT benchmark and provide an online leaderboard where submitted translation results can be evaluated by our trained JUDGER.

Distinguishing Right from Wrong in Debates: Attribution Analysis of Chinese Harmful Memes

Research on harmful meme detection has garnered significant attention, resulting in the development of numerous datasets and methods. However, progress in detecting Chinese harmful memes lags considerably, primarily due to two challenges: first, accurately assessing a meme's harmfulness depends heavily on understanding deep cultural context; second, many memes are semantically ambiguous, making harmfulness highly subjective. To address these issues, we focus on the interpretable detection of Chinese harmful memes by constructing the first Chinese harmful meme explanation dataset, Ex-ToxiCN-MM. This dataset offers opposing interpretations, categorized as "harmful" and "non-harmful", for each meme, aiming to rigorously evaluate a model's ability to discern and comprehend ambiguous, culturally grounded content. We built a specialized knowledge base of Chinese cultural concepts and offensive vocabulary to supply models with essential prior knowledge (C-HarmKB). To address the ambiguity and lack of background knowledge in meme attribution, we have developed a comprehensive attribution analysis framework, RIKE, which includes an Attribution Knowledge Enhancement module (AKE) and a Relative Intent Reasoning module (RIR). Extensive quantitative and qualitative experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms mainstream baseline models across multiple metrics in the task of attributing harmful memes in Chinese. CultivAgents: Cultivating Relationship-Centered Multi-Agent Systems for Personalized Gardening

Gardening is critical to support well-being, cultural continuity, and food autonomy, yet existing digital tools often provide generic advice that overlooks gardeners' skills, local ecologies, seasons, and cultural contexts. We introduce CultivAgents, a relationship-centered multi-agent system for personalized, socio-culturally grounded gardening support. Grounded in ethics of care, CultivAgents coordinates multiple specialized agents: an Experience Agent that adapts guidance to users' skill levels, an Environmental Agent that grounds advice in local and seasonal conditions, and an Ethnobotanical Agent that connects plants to cultural knowledge and histories. We evaluated CultivAgents through a three-phase mixed-methods study with domain experts (n=3), HCI researchers (n=7), and community gardeners (n=5), analyzing expert feedback, pre/post surveys, and participatory design activities. Results suggest that CultivAgents helped gardeners translate interest into situated action: community gardeners reported increased confidence (3.00 to 3.60), motivation (4.00 to 4.40), and trust in acting on AI advice (3.20 to 4.00). Participants valued hyperlocal ecological guidance and complementary agent perspectives, while also identifying limits in cultural specificity, ecological grounding, and agent coordination. The work advances relationship-centered AI, offering design implications for multi-agent systems that support food sovereignty, community resilience, and cultural preservation.

DFKI-MLT at SemEval-2026 TASK 7: Steering Multilingual Models Towards Cultural Knowledge

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used across diverse linguistic and cultural contexts, yet their cultural knowledge remains uneven across regions and languages. We present the DFKI-MLT system for SemEval-2026 Task 7 on cultural awareness, where we apply activation steering to multilingual LLMs using language vectors extracted from parallel FLORES data. Our method performs inference-time adaptation by adding language-specific steering vectors to the residual stream at a selected transformer layer, without any parameter updates. We participated in both the short-answer (SAQ) and multiple-choice (MCQ) tracks; however, only our MCQ submission received an official score. In the official MCQ track, we achieved 86.96% accuracy, ranking 7th out of 17 teams. To better understand system behavior, we conduct post-hoc analyses on the shared-task MCQ and SAQ settings. These analyses show that activation steering yields modest and heterogeneous improvements on cultural reasoning: gains are strongly layer-sensitive, vary substantially across language-region pairs, with some configurations even degrading performance, and interact with prompt formulation, comparing generic and culturally conditioned prompts. Our findings suggest that prompt design and activation steering should be jointly optimized for culturally aware multilingual inference.

Model Collapse as Cultural Evolution

Model collapse, the progressive degradation of LLMs trained on their own outputs, has been characterized statistically but lacks a linguistic explanation for which structures degrade, in what order, and why. We show that iterated learning theory from cultural evolution fills this gap. We derive five falsifiable predictions, distinguish those uniquely discriminative for the theory from confirmatory ones, and test them by self-training LLaMA-2-7B and Mistral-7B over 10 generations in English, German, and Turkish. The critical discriminative finding: compositionality follows a non-monotonic trajectory (initially rising, then falling) under unfiltered self-training. This signature persists with maximally regular seed data (ruling out noise removal) and is sustained only by task-grounded filtering, not random filtering, providing the first LLM-scale evidence for the compression-communication tradeoff. All predictions are confirmed with large effect sizes (Hedges' g>1.6g > 1.6; BF10>100\mathrm{BF}_{10} > 100), and LLM regularization gradients closely match human behavioral data (R2=0.94R^2 = 0.94). These results reframe model collapse as a cultural transmission phenomenon and yield concrete principles for self-training pipeline design.

Cross-Lingual Consensus: Aligning Multilingual Cultural Knowledge via Multilingual Self-Consistency

Although Large Language Models (LLMs) demonstrate strong capabilities across various tasks, they exhibit significant performance discrepancies across languages. While prompting LLMs in English typically yields the highest general performance, it often induces a Western-centric bias, hindering the model's ability to accurately reflect diverse cultural knowledge. We hypothesize that LLMs already possess rich cultural knowledge embedded within local-language representations, but fail to retrieve it when prompted in English. To bridge this cross-lingual knowledge gap, we propose a novel self-supervised framework. Our method leverages multilingual self-consistency to identify the most reliable cultural responses across languages, combined with a self-critique mechanism to transfer this knowledge to the weaker language. Evaluations on the BLEnD benchmark demonstrate that our approach significantly improves cultural alignment-boosting performance on English queries by an average of 5.03%-relying entirely on self-generated data. Ultimately, our work demonstrates that latent cultural knowledge can be successfully surfaced and propagated across languages, enabling more culturally equitable and consistent LLMs.

Occupational Prompting Reveals Cultural Bias in Large Language Models

Social roles shape expectations, priorities, and judgments, yet it remains unclear how large language models (LLMs) associate occupational identities with broader cultural value patterns. Prior work used nationality-based cultural prompting to study how LLM responses to value-survey questions align with human cultural benchmarks. In this paper, we extend that framework by replacing cultural prompting with occupational prompting to examine how professional-role cues influence value-survey responses in open-weight LLMs. Using a survey-grounded evaluation pipeline based on questions from the Integrated Values Surveys, we project model responses into the two-dimensional Inglehart--Welzel cultural space. We prompt open-weight LLMs to answer questions under occupational identities such as accountant, teacher, engineer, and nurse, and then analyze how these occupation-conditioned responses are positioned on the cultural map. Our results show that when open-weight LLMs are prompted with occupations rather than national identities, their responses remain within a broadly Western-leaning region of the cultural map. However, different occupations introduce shifts within this region, producing distinct occupational skews. This indicates that occupational prompts are not treated as neutral role labels, but instead elicit structured value patterns. These findings extend survey-based evaluation of cultural bias beyond nationality-based prompting and provide a framework for studying how occupational personas shape value expression in LLMs.

Going PLACES: Participatory Localized Red Teaming for Text-to-Image Safety in the Global South

Despite the global deployment of text-to-image (T2I) models, their safety frameworks are largely calibrated to a Western-centric default, creating significant vulnerabilities for the rest of the world. To embrace cultural pluralism and bring historically under-represented perspectives in T2I safety, we conduct localised community-centered red teaming studies in the Global South. Our two-fold approach prioritizes localization and participation, by focusing on secondary urban centers in these regions, and conducting community engagement and training workshops to contextualize local norms. As a result, we present PLACES, a dataset comprising over 26,000 examples of T2I model failures collected in partnership with universities in Ghana, Nigeria, and two regions of India (Karnataka and Punjab). Analysis of prompts collected reveals a wide-ranging diversity in socio-cultural and linguistic attributes, when compared to existing geography-agnostic crowdsourced red-teaming data. We observe unique adversarial patterns enabled by local cultural and linguistic nuances, and distinct clusters within region around specific themes, such as religion in India. Moreover, we uncover structural contextual gaps in existing safety frameworks by identifying novel harms showing normative dissonance (e.g., violating religious norms, ignoring local customs, and ominous symbolism). This work argues that expanding T2I safety requires moving beyond mere scale to incorporate deeply localised, participatory methodologies for data collection and contextualization. Dynamics of collective creativity in AI art competitions

Creativity is a fundamental aspect of how culture evolves, yet the mechanisms by which groups produce novelty are notoriously difficult to infer from the historical record. Iterated learning experiments have shown that cultural transmission reliably distorts artifacts toward the inductive biases of learners, but most of this work uses linear chains between human participants, leaving open how these dynamics play out in the networked, human-AI systems that increasingly shape cultural production. In this study, we leverage one such system, Artbreeder, which hosts daily "remix parties" where users iteratively build on each other's work from a single seed image, producing branching lineages of human-AI co-created images. We analyze a dataset of 130,882 images from 368 remix parties over 13 months and find that images become simpler and converge toward common thematic "attractors" (e.g., steampunk scenes, alien architecture). We also find that while more novel "parent" images produce more novel and complex "children" that attract more likes, users paradoxically prefer to remix images that are less novel and complex. Finally, larger remix parties produce more novelty at the cost of lower complexity.

HalluScore: Large Language Model Hallucination Question Answering Benchmark

Large language models (LLMs) have achieved remarkable progress in natural language generation, but remain susceptible to hallucination. In response to growing concerns about hallucinations, several benchmarks have been developed, primarily in English and Chinese. However, Arabic remains underrepresented, with limited benchmarks for LLMs hallucination due to scarce annotated resources and the language's morphological complexity. Consequently, existing benchmarks do not adequately reflect the linguistic, cultural, and reasoning characteristics of Arabic. To address this gap, we introduce HalluScore, a structured Arabic question answering benchmark designed to evaluate hallucination behavior in LLMs across different levels of reasoning difficulty, various knowledge domains, historical timelines, and culturally grounded Arabic scenarios. It contains 827 carefully curated questions for evaluating, detecting, and mitigating hallucination in LLMs. The dataset was constructed through a structured pipeline involving quality assurance, filtering for clarity and factual validity, and model-driven selection to retain questions that consistently trigger hallucinations. Each question is linked to verified ground-truth evidence, answer explanations, and multi-label annotations. Using the HalluScore benchmark, we conduct a comprehensive empirical analysis of hallucination patterns across 17 Arabic, multilingual, and reasoning LLMs. Moreover, we provide high-quality human annotations identifying hallucinated, non-hallucinated, and partially hallucinated responses of all evaluated LLMs. These results suggest that hallucination in Arabic LLMs extends beyond factual inaccuracies, encompassing challenges related to cultural understanding, linguistic reasoning, and logical consistency. We release HalluScore to support future research on improving the reliability and cultural competence of LLMs in Arabic.

Universal Dynamics of Punctuated Progress

Scientific and technological frontiers advance through punctuated dynamics, yet the principles governing these dynamics remain poorly understood. Here we collect and analyze datasets tracking the evolution of frontiers across 9 different domains, spanning materials discovery, structural biology, AI, computational biomedicine, data science, theoretical computer science, Formula-1 racing, and physical wheel building. Analyzing 6.8M solutions to 6.7K tasks, we uncover three universal patterns: (1) waiting times between new frontiers are heavy-tailed, with most attempts concentrated in long stasis; (2) frontier records accumulate at a sublinear rate, faster than logarithmic yet slower than linear growth; (3) record-breaking events are temporally correlated, generating short-term predictability yet long-term unpredictability. Despite the differences in the scale, scope, and definition of the settings, these patterns are remarkably consistent across all domains we study, and are not captured by models from complex systems, record statistics, economics of innovation, and cultural evolution. We trace the missing ingredient to the distinction between radical and incremental innovation, and develop a minimal, analytically solvable model incorporating both radical resets that restructure what is achievable and incremental refinements that exploit the current frontier. The simple model reproduces all three empirical regularities. Remarkably, the leading-order predictions are parameter-independent, identifying a new universality class governing punctuated progress and yielding testable predictions about how openness and access to frontier solutions shape the pace of advance. Overall, these results reveal universal dynamics governing punctuated progress and identify the interplay between radical resets and incremental refinements as the key driver of how scientific and technological frontiers advance.

Defining Cultural Capabilities for AI Evaluation: A Taxonomy Grounded in Intercultural Communication Theory

Tremendous efforts have been put into evaluating the inclusivity and effectiveness of AI systems across cultures. However, the cultural capabilities considered in much of the literature remain vaguely defined, are referred to using interchangeable terminology, and are typically limited to recalling accurate information about various demographics, regions, and nationalities. To address this construct ambiguity, we draw from Intercultural Communication scholarship and propose a three-level taxonomy of AI-relevant cultural capabilities: Cultural Awareness answers "Does the model know?", Cultural Sensitivity answers "How does it frame its knowledge?", and Cultural Competence answers "Can it adapt as the interaction evolves?". Beyond conceptual clarification, we position this taxonomy as a practical tool for improving the validity and interpretability of AI evaluation in real-world, multicultural settings. Without such construct clarity, evaluation results risk overstating model capabilities and may lead to inappropriate deployment decisions in culturally sensitive contexts.

Beyond Performance Disparities: A Three-Level Audit of Representational Harm in CelebA

Large-scale facial datasets like CelebA are widely used in computer vision, yet the cultural biases embedded in their labels remain underexplored. Fairness research has distinguished representational from allocational harms, but audits of computer vision datasets have mostly examined categorical labels, leaving open how such harms appear in learned features and model attention. This paper examines CelebA at three levels: dataset structure, learned feature weights, and spatial attention, focusing on how gendered double standards of ageing and beauty are encoded in the data and reproduced in model behaviour. First, hierarchical clustering of 202,599 images shows that the 39 attributes organise into latent trait bundles aligned with cultural archetypes: performative femininity (youth, makeup, adornment) and professional masculinity (ageing, facial hair, formal attire). Female faces, though more often rated attractive overall, incur steep penalties when assigned to ageing or masculine-coded clusters. Second, XGBoost with SHAP analysis reveal gender-specific effects, such as adiposity reducing attractiveness only for females. Third, Grad-CAM finds that predictions for female and younger male subgroups concentrate on mid-face cues, whereas predictions for older males drift toward peripheral cues such as hair and clothing. Older males attain the highest accuracy but the lowest average precision, indicating categorical exclusion of groups outside the dataset's evaluative templates. Cultural double standards thus pass from media representation into dataset labels, feature weights, and model attention, producing two representational harms: hyper-scrutiny of women under a narrow evaluative template, and exclusion of older men from the scheme entirely. Fairness metrics focused on performance disparities mask both, underscoring the need to address representational harm in fairness research.

Unsteady Metrics and Benchmarking Cultures of AI Model Builders

The primary way to establish and compare competencies in foundation and generative AI models has shifted from peer-reviewed literature to press releases and company blog posts, where model builders highlight results on selected benchmarks. These artifacts now largely define the state of the art for researchers and the public. Despite their prominence, which benchmarks model builders choose to highlight, and what they communicate through this selection, is underexamined. To investigate, we introduce and open-source Benchmarking-Cultures-25, a dataset of 231 benchmarks highlighted across 139 model releases in 2025 from 11 major AI builders, alongside an interactive tool to explore the data. Our analysis reveals a fragmented evaluation landscape with limited cross-model comparability: 63.2% of highlighted benchmarks are used by a single builder, and 38.5% appear in just one release. Few achieve widespread use (e.g., GPQA Diamond, LiveCodeBench, AIME 2025). Moreover, benchmarks are attributed different competencies by different builders, depending on their narrative. To disentangle these conflicting presentations, we develop a unified taxonomy mapping diverging terminology to a shared framework of measured signals based on what benchmark authors claim to measure. "General knowledge application" is the second most popular, yet vaguely defined, category. Qualitative analysis shows many such benchmarks deemphasize construct validity, instead framing results as indicators of progress toward AGI. Their authors claim to measure knowledge or reasoning broadly, yet mostly evaluate STEM subjects (especially math). We argue that highlighted benchmarks function less as standardized measurement tools and more as flexible narrative devices prioritizing market positioning over scientific evaluation. Training-Free Cultural Alignment of Large Language Models via Persona Disagreement

Large language models increasingly mediate decisions that turn on moral judgement, yet a growing body of evidence shows that their implicit preferences are not culturally neutral. Existing cultural alignment methods either require per-country preference data and fine-tuning budgets or assume white-box access to model internals that commercial APIs do not expose. In this work, we focus on this realistic black-box, public-data-only regime and observe that within-country sociodemographic disagreement, not consensus, is the primary steering signal. We introduce DISCA (Disagreement-Informed Steering for Cultural Alignment), an inference-time method that instantiates each country as a panel of World-Values-Survey-grounded persona agents and converts their disagreement into a bounded, loss-averse logit correction. Across 20 countries and 7 open-weight backbones (2B--70B), DISCA reduces cultural misalignment on MultiTP by 10--24% on the six backbones >=3.8B, and 2--7% on open-ended scenarios, without changing any weights. Our results suggest that inference-time calibration is a scalable alternative to fine-tuning for serving the long tail of global moral preferences.

XL-SafetyBench: A Country-Grounded Cross-Cultural Benchmark for LLM Safety and Cultural Sensitivity

Current LLM safety benchmarks are predominantly English-centric and often rely on translation, failing to capture country-specific harms. Moreover, they rarely evaluate a model's ability to detect culturally embedded sensitivities as distinct from universal harms. We introduce XL-SafetyBench. a suite of 5,500 test cases across 10 country-language pairs, comprising a Jailbreak Benchmark of country-grounded adversarial prompts and a Cultural Benchmark where local sensitivities are embedded within innocuous requests. Each item is constructed via a multi-stage pipeline that combines LLM-assisted discovery, automated validation gates, and dual independent native-speaker annotators per country. To distinguish principled refusal from comprehension failure, we evaluate Attack Success Rate (ASR) alongside two complementary metrics we introduce: Neutral-Safe Rate (NSR) and Cultural Sensitivity Rate (CSR). Evaluating 10 frontier and 27 local LLMs reveals two key findings. First, jailbreak robustness and cultural awareness do not show a coupled relationship among frontier models, so a composite safety score obscures per-axis variation. Second, local models exhibit a near-linear ASR-NSR trade-off (r = -0.81), indicating that their apparent safety reflects generation failure rather than genuine alignment. XL-SafetyBench enables more nuanced, cross-cultural safety evaluation in the multilingual era.

Cultural Benchmarking of LLMs in Standard and Dialectal Arabic Dialogues

There is a significant gap in evaluating cultural reasoning in LLMs using conversational datasets that capture culturally rich and dialectal contexts. Most Arabic benchmarks focus on short text snippets in Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), overlooking the cultural nuances that naturally arise in dialogues. To address this gap, we introduce ArabCulture-Dialogue, a culturally grounded conversational dataset covering 13 Arabic-speaking countries, in both MSA and each country's respective dialect, spanning 12 daily-life topics and 54 fine-grained subtopics. We utilize the dataset to form three benchmarking tasks: (i) multiple-choice cultural reasoning, (ii) machine translation between MSA and dialects, and (iii) dialect-steering generation. Our experiments indicate that the performance gap between MSA and Arabic dialects still exists, whereby the models perform worse on all three tasks in the dialectal setup, compared to the MSA one.

FASH-iCNN: Making Editorial Fashion Identity Inspectable Through Multimodal CNN Probing

Fashion AI systems routinely encode the aesthetic logic of specific houses, editors, and historical moments without disclosing it. We present FASH-iCNN, a multimodal system trained on 87,547 Vogue runway images across 15 fashion houses spanning 1991-2024 that makes this cultural logic inspectable. Given a photograph of a garment, the system recovers which house produced it, which era it belongs to, and which color tradition it reflects. A clothing-only model identifies the fashion house at 78.2% top-1 across 14 houses, the decade at 88.6% top-1, and the specific year at 58.3% top-1 across 34 years with a mean error of just 2.2 years. Probing which visual channels carry this signal reveals a sharp dissociation: removing color costs only 10.6pp of house identity accuracy, while removing texture costs 37.6pp, establishing texture and luminance as the primary carriers of editorial identity. FASH-iCNN treats editorial culture as the signal rather than background noise, identifying which houses, eras, and color traditions shaped each output so that users can see not just what the system predicts but which houses, editors, and historical moments are encoded in that prediction.

Progressing beyond Art Masterpieces or Touristic Clichés: how to assess your LLMs for cultural alignment?

Although the cultural (mis)alignment of Large Language Models (LLMs) has attracted increasing attention -- often framed in terms of cultural bias -- until recently there has been limited work on the design and development of datasets for cultural assessment. Here, we review existing approaches to such datasets and identify their main limitations. To address these issues, we propose design guidelines for annotators and report on the construction of a dataset built according to these principles. We further present a series of contrastive experiments conducted with this dataset. The results demonstrate that our design yields test sets with greater discriminative power, effectively distinguishing between models specialized for a given culture and those that are not, ceteris paribus.

Do LLMs Capture Embodied Cognition and Cultural Variation? Cross-Linguistic Evidence from Demonstratives

Do large language models (LLMs) truly acquire embodied cognition and cultural conventions from text? We introduce demonstratives, fundamental spatial expressions like "this/that" in English and "zhè/nà" in Chinese, as a novel probe for grounded knowledge. Using 6,400 responses from 320 native speakers, we establish a human baseline: English speakers reliably distinguish proximal-distal referents but struggle with perspective-taking, while Chinese speakers switch perspectives fluently but tolerate distal ambiguity. In contrast, five state-of-the-art LLMs fail to inherently understand the proximal-distal contrast and show no cultural differences, defaulting to English-centric reasoning. Our study contributes (i) a new task, based on demonstratives, as a new lens for evaluating embodied cognition and cultural conventions; (ii) empirical evidence of cross-cultural asymmetries in human interpretation; (iii) a new perspective on the egocentric-sociocentric debate, showing both orientations coexist but vary across languages; and (iv) a call to address individual variation in future model design.

Dharma, Data and Deception: An LLM-Powered Rhetorical Analysis of Cow-Urine Health Claims on YouTube

Health misinformation remains one of the most pressing challenges on social media, particularly when cultural traditions intersect with scientific-sounding claims. These dynamics are not only global but also deeply local, manifesting in culturally specific controversies that require careful analysis. Motivated by this, we examine 100 YouTube transcripts that promote or debunk cow urine (gomutra) as a health remedy, focusing on rhetorical strategies such as appeals to authority, efficacy appeals, and conspiracy framing. We employ large language models (LLMs) including GPT-4, GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-5, Gemini 2.5 Pro, and Mistral Medium 3 to annotate transcripts using a 14-category taxonomy of persuasive tactics. Our analysis reveals that promoters predominantly rely on efficacy appeals and social proof, while debunkers emphasize authority and rebuttal. Human evaluation of a subset of annotations yielded 90.1% inter-annotator agreement, confirming the reliability of our taxonomy and validation process. This work advances computational methods for misinformation analysis and demonstrates how LLMs can support large-scale studies of cultural discourse online.

Why are all LLMs Obsessed with Japanese Culture? On the Hidden Cultural and Regional Biases of LLMs

LLMs have been showing limitations when it comes to cultural coverage and competence, and in some cases show regional biases such as amplifying Western and Anglocentric viewpoints. While there have been works analysing the cultural capabilities of LLMs, there has not been specific work on highlighting LLM regional preferences when it comes to cultural-related questions. In this work, we propose a new dataset based on a comprehensive taxonomy of Culture-Related Open Questions (CROQ). The results show that, contrary to previous cultural bias work, LLMs show a clear tendency towards countries such as Japan. Moveover, our results show that when prompting in languages such as English or other high-resource ones, LLMs tend to provide more diverse outputs and show less inclinations towards answering questions highlighting countries for which the input language is an official language. Finally, we also investigate at which point of LLM training this cultural bias emerges, with our results suggesting that the first clear signs appear after supervised fine-tuning, and not during pre-training.

AFRILANGTUTOR: Advancing Language Tutoring and Culture Education in Low-Resource Languages with Large Language Models

How can language learning systems be developed for languages that lack sufficient training resources? This challenge is increasingly faced by developers across the African continent who aim to build AI systems capable of understanding and responding in local languages. To address this gap, we introduce AFRILANGDICT, a collection of 194.7K African language-English dictionary entries designed as seed resources for generating language-learning materials, enabling us to automatically construct large-scale, diverse, and verifiable student-tutor question-answer interactions suitable for training AI-assisted language tutors. Using AFRILANGDICT, we build AFRILANGEDU, a dataset of 78.9K multi-turn training examples for Supervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) and Direct Preference Optimization (DPO). Using AFRILANGEDU, we train language tutoring models collectively referred to as AFRILANGTUTOR. We fine-tune two multilingual LLMs: Llama-3-8B-IT and Gemma-3-12B-IT on AFRILANGEDU across 10 African languages and evaluate their performance. Our results show that models trained on AFRILANGEDU consistently outperform their base counterparts, and combining SFT and DPO yields substantial improvements, with gains ranging from 1.8% to 15.5% under LLM-as-a-judge evaluations across four criteria. The GaoYao Benchmark: A Comprehensive Framework for Evaluating Multilingual and Multicultural Abilities of Large Language Models

Evaluating the multilingual and multicultural capabilities of Large Language Models (LLMs) is essential for their global utility. However, current benchmarks face three critical limitations: (1) fragmented evaluation dimensions that often neglect deep cultural nuances; (2) insufficient language coverage in subjective tasks relying on low-quality machine translation; and (3) shallow analysis that lacks diagnostic depth beyond simple rankings. To address these, we introduce GaoYao, a comprehensive benchmark with 182.3k samples, 26 languages and 51 nations/areas. First, GaoYao proposes a unified framework categorizing evaluation tasks into three cultural layers (General Multilingual, Cross-cultural, Monocultural) and nine cognitive sub-layers. Second, we achieve native-quality expansion by leveraging experts to rigorously localize subjective benchmarks into 19 languages and synthesizing cross-cultural test sets for 34 cultures, surpassing prior coverage by up to 111%. Third, we conduct an in-depth diagnostic analysis on 20+ flagship and compact LLMs. Our findings reveal significant geographical performance disparities and distinct gaps between tasks, offering a reliable map for future work. Culturally uneven urban perception in large language models

Large language models (LLMs) are increasingly used to describe and evaluate cities, yet the cultural structure of their urban judgments remains understudied. Here we introduce a measurement framework for testing whether LLM-based urban perception is culturally neutral, using a globally stratified street-view image dataset. Open-ended descriptions and structured scores generated by three frontier multimodal models all show that the neutral baseline lies closer to regional framings associated with Europe and North America than to other cultural framings. Comparisons between AI and human urban perception further show that prompting can move AI responses closer to specific regional human descriptions, but fails to recover the variety and diversity of human responses, flattening observed demographic patterns and introducing sentiment-based self-favouring bias. These results indicate a systematic risk in treating AI as a neutral tool for urban tasks, especially when model outputs are used to compare, evaluate or represent cities across cultural contexts.

CulturALL: Benchmarking Multilingual and Multicultural Competence of LLMs on Grounded Tasks

Large language models (LLMs) are now deployed worldwide, inspiring a surge of benchmarks that measure their multilingual and multicultural abilities. However, these benchmarks prioritize generic language understanding or superficial cultural trivia, leaving the evaluation of grounded tasks -- where models must reason within real-world, context-rich scenarios -- largely unaddressed. To fill this gap, we present CulturALL, a comprehensive and challenging benchmark to assess LLMs' multilingual and multicultural competence on grounded tasks. CulturALL is built via a human--AI collaborative framework: expert annotators ensure appropriate difficulty and factual accuracy, while LLMs lighten the manual workload. By incorporating diverse sources, CulturALL ensures comprehensive scenario coverage. Each item is carefully designed to present a high level of difficulty, making CulturALL challenging. CulturALL contains 2,610 samples in 14 languages from 51 regions, distributed across 16 topics to capture the full breadth of grounded tasks. Experiments show that the best LLM achieves 44.48% accuracy on CulturALL, underscoring substantial room for improvement.

AlignCultura: Towards Culturally Aligned Large Language Models?

Cultural alignment in Large Language Models (LLMs) is essential for producing contextually aware, respectful, and trustworthy outputs. Without it, models risk generating stereotyped, insensitive, or misleading responses that fail to reflect cultural diversity w.r.t Helpful, Harmless, and Honest (HHH) paradigm. Existing benchmarks represent early steps toward cultural alignment; yet, no benchmarks currently enables systematic evaluation of cultural alignment in line with UNESCO's principles of cultural diversity w.r.t HHH paradigm. Therefore, to address this gap, we built Align-Cultura, two-stage pipeline for cultural alignment. Stage I constructs CULTURAX, the HHH-English dataset grounded in the UNESCO cultural taxonomy, through Query Construction, which reclassifies prompts, expands underrepresented domains (or labels), and prevents data leakage with SimHash. Then, Response Generation pairs prompts with culturally grounded responses via two-stage rejection sampling. The final dataset contains 1,500 samples spanning 30 subdomains of tangible and intangible cultural forms. Stage II benchmarks CULTURAX on general-purpose models, culturally fine-tuned models, and open-weight LLMs (Qwen3-8B and DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Qwen-7B). Empirically, culturally fine-tuned models improve joint HHH by 4%-6%, reduce cultural failures by 18%, achieve 10%-12% efficiency gains, and limit leakage to 0.3%.

LQM: Linguistically Motivated Multidimensional Quality Metrics for Machine Translation

Existing MT evaluation frameworks, including automatic metrics and human evaluation schemes such as Multidimensional Quality Metrics (MQM), are largely language-agnostic. However, they often fail to capture dialect- and culture-specific errors in diglossic languages (e.g., Arabic), where translation failures stem from mismatches in language variety, content coverage, and pragmatic appropriateness rather than surface form alone.We introduce LQM: Linguistically Motivated Multidimensional Quality Metrics for MT. LQM is a hierarchical error taxonomy for diagnosing MT errors through six linguistically grounded levels: sociolinguistics, pragmatics, semantics, morphosyntax, orthography, and graphetics (Figure 1). We construct a bidirectional parallel corpus of 3,850 sentences (550 per variety) spanning seven Arabic dialects (Egyptian, Emirati, Jordanian, Mauritanian, Moroccan, Palestinian, and Yemeni), derived from conversational, culturally rich content. We evaluate six LLMs in a zero-shot setting and conduct expert span-level human annotation using LQM, producing 6,113 labeled error spans across 3,495 unique erroneous sentences, along with severity-weighted quality scores. We complement this analysis with an automatic metric (spBLEU). Though validated here on Arabic, LQM is a language-agnostic framework designed to be easily applied to or adapted for other languages. Culture-Aware Humorous Captioning: Multimodal Humor Generation across Cultural Contexts

Recent multimodal large language models have shown promising ability in generating humorous captions for images, yet they still lack stable control over explicit cultural context, making it difficult to jointly maintain image relevance, contextual appropriateness, and humor quality under a specified cultural background. To address this limitation, we introduce a new multimodal generation task, culture-aware humorous captioning, which requires a model to generate a humorous caption conditioned on both an input image and a target cultural context. Captions generated under different cultural contexts are not expected to share the same surface form, but should remain grounded in similar visual situations or humorous rationales.To support this task, we establish a six-dimensional evaluation framework covering image relevance, contextual fit, semantic richness, reasonableness, humor, and creativity. We further propose a staged alignment framework that first initializes the model with high-resource supervision under the Western cultural context, then performs multi-dimensional preference alignment via judge-based GRPO with a Degradation-aware Prototype Repulsion Constraint to mitigate reward hacking in open-ended generation, and finally adapts the model to the Eastern cultural context with a small amount of supervision. Experimental results show that our method achieves stronger overall performance under the proposed evaluation framework, with particularly large gains in contextual fit and a better balance between image relevance and humor under cultural constraints.

Do LLMs Use Cultural Knowledge Without Being Told? A Multilingual Evaluation of Implicit Pragmatic Adaptation

Many benchmarks show that large language models can answer direct questions about culture. We study a different question: do they also change how they speak when culture is only implied by the situation? We evaluate 60 culturally grounded conversational scenarios across five languages in three conditions: a neutral baseline (Prompt A), an explicit cultural instruction (Prompt B), and implicit situational cueing (Prompt C). We score responses on 12 pragmatic features covering deference to authority, individual-versus-group framing, and uncertainty management. We define Pragmatic Context Sensitivity (PCS) as the fraction of the Prompt A->B shift that reappears under Prompt A->C. Across four deployed LLMs and five languages (English, German, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu), the primary stable-only PCS mean is 0.196 (SD = 0.113), indicating that the models recover only about one-fifth of the pragmatic shift they can produce when instructed explicitly. Transfer is strongest for authority-related cues (0.299) and weakest for individual-versus-group framing (0.120). Uncertainty-related behaviour is mixed: hedging density exhibits negative explicit gaps in all five languages, suggesting that alignment training actively suppresses the target behaviour. Because Hindi and Urdu share core grammar yet index distinct cultural communities, we use them as a natural control; a paired analysis finds no reliable baseline difference (t = 0.96, p = 0.339, dz = 0.06), suggesting that models respond primarily to linguistic structure rather than to the cultural associations a language carries. We argue that multilingual cultural pragmatics is an explicit-versus-implicit deployment problem, not only a factual knowledge problem.

BIASEDTALES-ML: A Multilingual Dataset for Analyzing Narrative Attribute Distributions in LLM-Generated Stories

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used to generate narrative content, including children's stories, which play an important role in social and cultural learning. Despite growing interest in AI safety and alignment, most existing evaluations focus primarily on English, leaving the cross-lingual generalization of aligned behavior underexplored. In this work, we introduce BiasedTales-ML, a large-scale parallel corpus of approximately 350,000 children's stories generated across eight typologically and culturally diverse languages using a full-permutation prompting design. We propose a structured generator-extractor pipeline and a multi-dimensional distributional analysis framework to examine how narrative attributes vary across languages, models, and social conditions. Our analysis reveals substantial cross-lingual variability in narrative generation patterns, indicating that distributions observed in English do not always exhibit similar characteristics in other languages, particularly in lower-resource settings. At the narrative level, we identify recurring structural patterns involving character roles, settings, and thematic emphasis, which manifest differently across linguistic contexts. These findings highlight the limitations of English-centric evaluation for characterizing socially grounded narrative generation in multilingual settings. We release the dataset, code, and an interactive visualization tool to support future research on multilingual narrative analysis and evaluation.

C-Mining: Unsupervised Discovery of Seeds for Cultural Data Synthesis via Geometric Misalignment

Achieving cultural alignment in Large Language Models (LLMs) increasingly depends on synthetic data generation. For such synthesis, the most vital initial step is seed curation; however, current methods lack quantifiable standards for selecting these seeds. Existing approaches rely on unscalable manual curation or bias-prone LLM extraction, treating cultural specificity as an abstract concept rather than a measurable signal. In this paper, we address this "quantification gap" by proposing C-Mining, an unsupervised framework that transforms the discovery of cultural seeds from a subjective selection process into a computable data mining formulation. Our approach exploits a novel geometric insight, leveraging the cross-lingual misalignment of cultural concepts within pre-trained embedding spaces as a quantifiable discovery signal. By systematically identifying these regions characterized by pronounced linguistic exclusivity and geometric isolation, while actively filtering out noise, C-Mining automatically extracts high-fidelity Culture Points (CPs) from raw multilingual corpora without reliance on human or LLM supervision, reducing preparation costs by more than 150-fold. We further leverage the mined knowledge to steer the synthesis of diverse instruction-tuning datasets. Extensive experiments demonstrate that this seed-centric approach significantly enhances cultural understanding and reasoning capabilities, achieving a +6.03 point improvement on CulturalBench-Hard and surpassing state-of-the-art baselines, providing a scalable, quantifiable solution for high-quality cultural data synthesis.

Enhancing Mental Health Counseling Support in Bangladesh using Culturally-Grounded Knowledge

Large language models (LLMs) show promise in generating supportive responses for mental health and counseling applications. However, their responses often lack cultural sensitivity, contextual grounding, and clinically appropriate guidance. This work addresses the gap of how to systematically incorporate domain-specific, clinically validated knowledge into LLMs to improve counseling quality. We utilize and compare two approaches, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and a knowledge graph (KG)-based method, designed to support para-counselors. Our KG is constructed manually and clinically validated, capturing causal relationships between stressors, interventions, and outcomes, with contributions from multidisciplinary people. We evaluated multiple LLMs in both settings using BERTScore F1 and SBERT cosine similarity, as well as human evaluation across five metrics, which is designed to directly measure the effectiveness of counseling beyond similarity at the surface level. The results show that KG-based approaches consistently improve contextual relevance, clinical appropriateness, and practical usability compared to RAG alone, demonstrating that structured, expert-validated knowledge plays a critical role in addressing LLMs limitations in counseling tasks.

AdaCultureSafe: Adaptive Cultural Safety Grounded by Cultural Knowledge in Large Language Models

With the global proliferation of Large Language Models (LLMs), cultural safety, defined as the ability to generate respectful and appropriate responses across diverse cultures, becomes critical for responsible AI deployment. However, existing research often treats cultural safety and cultural knowledge in isolation. It remains unclear whether cultural safety is grounded in understanding varying cultural knowledge to enable LLMs to adaptively yield respectful and appropriate responses across diverse cultures, which trigger ethical concerns in cross-cultural scenarios. In this work, we introduce AdaCultureSafe, a dataset designed to jointly evaluate cultural safety and knowledge. Through AdaCultureSafe, we reveal a critical insight: \textit{a significant decoupling exists between cultural safety and cultural knowledge proficiency. Although LLMs possess rich cultural knowledge, they fail to leverage it to improve cultural safety.} LLMs tend to rely on generic safety rather than safety based on culture-specific knowledge. Motivated by this, we propose a knowledge-grounded method that elicits internal cultural knowledge in LLMs during response generation. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach effectively improves cultural safety. Our work can aid better understanding the landscape of cultural safety of LLMs.

The Language of Bargaining: Linguistic Effects in LLM Negotiations

Negotiation is a core component of social intelligence, requiring agents to balance strategic reasoning, cooperation, and social norms. Recent work shows that LLMs can engage in multi-turn negotiation, yet nearly all evaluations occur exclusively in English. Using controlled multi-agent simulations across Ultimatum, Buy-Sell, and Resource Exchange games, we systematically isolate language effects across English and four Indic framings (Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Marwadi) by holding game rules, model parameters, and incentives constant across all conditions. We find that language choice can shift outcomes more strongly than changing models, reversing proposer advantages and reallocating surplus. Crucially, effects are task-contingent: Indic languages reduce stability in distributive games yet induce richer exploration in integrative settings. Our results demonstrate that evaluating LLM negotiation solely in English yields incomplete and potentially misleading conclusions. These findings caution against English-only evaluation of LLMs and suggest that culturally-aware evaluation is essential for fair deployment.

The Ratchet Effect in Silico: How Interaction Drives Cumulative Intelligence in Large Language Models

Human intelligence scales through cumulative cultural evolution (CCE), a ratchet process in which innovations are retained against entropic drift. Large language model training, by contrast, still depends primarily on static corpora and parameter growth, leaving little room for endogenous accumulation through interaction. We present POLIS (Population Orchestrated Learning and Inference Society), a framework in which heterogeneous agents generate solutions, verify one another's outputs, retain validated artifacts in shared cultural memory, and internalize them through parameter updates. On mathematical reasoning benchmarks, populations of 1--4B-parameter models achieved average gains of 8.8--18.9 points over base models and narrowed the gap to 70B+ monoliths. Mechanistic ablations identify peer verification as the main ratchet operator and show that internalization sustains accumulation across rounds, providing computational evidence that epistemic vigilance organizes durable knowledge growth. These results position structured social interaction as a scaling lever orthogonal to parameter count.

Empirical evidence of Large Language Model's influence on human spoken communication

From the printing press to social media, innovations in communication technology have repeatedly reshaped how ideas spread through human culture. Chatbots powered by generative artificial intelligence constitute a new medium, encoding cultural patterns in their neural representations and disseminating them in conversations with hundreds of millions of people. Whether these patterns transmit into human language, and ultimately shape human culture, is a fundamental question. While fully quantifying the causal impact of a chatbot like ChatGPT on human culture is challenging, lexical shifts in human spoken communication may offer an early indicator. Here we show that words preferentially generated by ChatGPT, such as delve, showcase, boast, intricacies and meticulous, increased abruptly in spontaneous human speech. A synthetic-control analysis of 737,083 hours of conversation from 824,634 podcast episodes, screened for unscripted speech, causally links this shift to ChatGPT's release. The measurable influence on spontaneous speech suggests that humans internalize the lexical choices of large language models (LLMs). A preregistered experiment (N = 496) confirms they do, as a brief chatbot interaction led participants to adopt its words as their own, persisting past a distractor task and confirmed in forced lexical choice, indicating entrenchment in the active vocabulary. Together these results show that machines trained on human data now feed their own traits back into human language, integrating LLMs into the ongoing processes of cultural evolution.. This coupling raises concerns about linguistic homogenization and the capacity of a few major AI providers for latent cultural influence at scale.
